Can't remember last time we visited but married a soldier 45yrs ago, interest started then. Being an army wife for 6yrs taught me an awful lot. We're both into folk music so a great deal of bagpipe music is Scottish, Northern England and Northern Irish music. We worked with people from all these places doing 2yrs 6mths in N Ireland and from getting married we've both thoroughly enjoyed going up there any chance we could. Good idea for kids interested in forces male or female, drs or nurses, for example RAMC puts a bit order into your life.

    Just These Please - 🤩

Just saw their final performance. Fantastic - very sharp, hilarious, current, moved apace. Could watch it all again.

For £27 each we were able to enjoy a full day of watching some of the world's top golfers ( near Gullane) at close range from 9am - 8pm. Free parking ( optional charity donation) and endless activities for all the family at the tented village. Only downside was the food prices which were a RIP off but bring a packed lunch and you are sorted.

Do not bother with the street party. We had a queue that stretched half way along George street on both sides of the road just to be packed in like cattle to Frederick street, no crowd control whatsoever, nothing to actually do until the fireworks. Good luck trying to even get close to the food/drink vans, just not possible unless you want a fight to get through the crowd. 50 minute wait to get to the portaloos and everyone was getting aggro in the queue. I’ll tell everyone planning NYE in Edinburgh to avoid the street party, it’s rubbish. Much better off just booking a bar/restaurant with a view of the fireworks well in advance.

The city itself was buzzing though, Hogmanay dinner at Chez Jules was outstanding and finding tables in pubs for a group of 6 was not as difficult as we thought it’d be. Just don’t do the street party.

I wouldn’t recommend travelling all the way to Scotland for this Christmas market. It is very small and is far too busy. Maybe they should make it ticket based as it cannot handle such a big flock of people.

We went on the last day of this, and had booked it as a birthday treat. What a disappointment it was. The information given on Van Gogh's life is short and fairly superficial, then you wander into the main event, the darkened room where his works are projected onto the walls along to various snippets of music. This is where you start to really suspect you've parted with your hard-earned cash for very little in return.

The projections and music are nice enough, but not really very informative, and definitely don't feel immersive - it's hard not to be distracted by the many folk wandering around, and it doesn't help when the projections regularly shake as people walk across the floor. There were just two or three tiny benches in the room, so if you're elderly or infirm, you're going to have to stand for the half hour or so. Even as a fit and healthy person, sitting on a hard floor for half an hour really doesn't add anything positive to the experience.

Once the film is finished, you head to the sunflower room - which is just a tiny space filled with plastic sunflowers and mirrors. Again, doesn't feel in the least bit immersive or impressive, and will take you literally five seconds to walk through.

This is followed up by the chance to try your hand at drawing like Van Gogh in close proximity with lots of other folk, and then a ridiculously overpriced gift shop with low quality products which have clearly been made as cheaply as possible.

The staff were largely impatient, rude and unsmiling, and only added to the feeling that you'd just walked into a get-rich-quick scam with people who really don't care about your experience or satisfaction.

What an absolute waste of money - you really would be far better relaxing at home with some nice music on, researching Van Gogh's life and admiring his pictures online.
