It was something I knew she would be extremely interested in - turns out I found it quite interesting as well.
The size and scope were surprising. While I knew it was certainly a larger than most yacht, I had no idea of its true size, the number of crew to maintain and operate it nor the engineering feat it truly is. The displays are excellent, the tour is well laid out and logical in order. The audio guides are extremely helpful.
All in all, a very educational and enjoyable experience. One that is highly recommended if you have any interest in the lifestyle of the British Royalty. It was fun to wander the streets and narrow alleys always in the shadow of the imposing castle. As the day wears on, it gets a little too crowded with tourists which detracts from it’s appeal. Everyone sells the same lambs wool scarfs, and, while my wife tried to visit every one, I quickly became bored by them all. Where it was a complete let down for us was that all of the stores sold exactly the same things at slightly different price points. If you are in the market for a scarf this is your street! We walked the beautiful grounds, even in the drizzle and cold, because we didn't want to miss a thing. But the inside tour of the rooms was interesting and special. The device was very easy to use and there were options in each room to dive deeper into the details - giving information about a portrait or something else in the room. We thought it might be just an obligatory/basic tour of a beautiful palace but really we learned a lot and it was wonderful. And since it is self-guided we were able to go at our own pace (which is NOT slow). The azalea lawn was spectacular. Blew me away. The blue poppies in full flower. Never seen before. For free this place is fantastic. - Lynn GWashington, UK78 contributionsCan't remember last time we visited but married a soldier 45yrs ago, interest started then. Being an army wife for 6yrs taught me an awful lot. We're both into folk music so a great deal of bagpipe music is Scottish, Northern England and Northern Irish music. We worked with people from all these places doing 2yrs 6mths in N Ireland and from getting married we've both thoroughly enjoyed going up there any chance we could. Alyssia was an entertaining and knowledgeable guide taking us from the beginning gin to present day and Pickerings.
