- Anas AGothenburg, Sweden710 contributionsThis square hosted the book burning event by Nazis back in the day. There's a book burning memorial located in the center of the square.Written 21 May 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - TJB @ Rodney StokeWells, UK567 contributionsVisited here as part of a walking tour of Belin that focused on WWII and the Cold War. Lots of history to take in and this spot whilst nothing to look at now was obviously a big part of the end of WWII. There is nothing to tell you what happened here which is a shame, given the magnitude of events at that time.Written 16 November 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - PaulBMaastricht, The Netherlands3,127 contributionsThe original Berliner 'Stadtschloss Unter den Linden'was the winter residence of the Margrave and Elector of Brandenburg and later the residence of the King of Prussia and the German Emperor.
During World War II it burned down and was replaced by the ugly
Palast der Republik of the former GDR.
During the first decad of this cebtury, the old palace was rebuilt, although the faces mostly look authentical, the structure is modern as wel as several inner and outer facades.
The rebuilt castle houses the non-European collections of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, and the book collections of Humboldt University and the Berlin City Library, a cinema, a passage with terraces and rooms for conferences and other meetings.Written 4 October 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The glass was unclear and dirty and it was hard to peer into it. There are empty book shelves which I guess represents the burnt booksWritten 29 September 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Really got me thinking about the decisions that people had to make at the train station. Life changing and in some cases life saving decisions about their children. Heartbreaking.Written 2 March 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Gunnar GCopenhagen, Denmark1,321 contributionsThe important german writer Bertolt Brecht who had to live in exile from 1933 to after 2WW lived at this site for the last years of his life. You can only visit the place by a guided tour. It turned out to be very interesting, and the excellent guide made you feel back in the 1950's. On the first floor you can see Brechts study, livingroom and bedroom (where he died).and on the ground floor his wife, the actress Helene Weigels appartment. She died in 1971 and they are both buried on the friedhof next to the Gedenkstätte.Written 20 September 2015This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - PhillygirlagainPhiladelphia384 contributionsThis is truly a peaceful place. The room is absolutely silent except for the slight whispy sounds of the blinds hitting each other from time to time. It’s like ASMR. If you are stressed out, overwhelmed, or need a place to think, this is the place to do it. Please, respect this room, though, and don’t come in to disturb the peace and treat it like a tourist attraction. It’s a very sacred space.Written 7 July 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- PrestonGuildUnited Kingdom55,320 contributionsIn Potsdamer Platz, not far from the Mall of Berlin is this memorial.
The mural and the photograph covered in glass remembers the workers uprising that was suppressed by the East German and Soviet forces.
The death toll was over 500 people.Written 21 January 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews. - Mindy1001Walsall, UK486 contributionsWalked through Spittlemarkt as we were sightseeing around Berlin.
Had a delightful lunch, and then carried on our way. People were friendly, the area was fine and it was nice to see a different part of Berlin.Written 29 December 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Interesting to see how things were and the escape attempts of the unfortunate people living in absurd situations.Written 11 July 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - ClogsPoland2,962 contributionsThe most interesting features of this city square are the statues of succesful Prussian generals. The flowers add to the lustre, but for the rest the square is not the most awesome to hang around on. Still, the benches serve to have a breather and reorientation after a walk or a metro ride. For the rest, meh.Written 8 September 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
