#6 of 456 Sights & Landmarks in Madrid
Great food and drink, entertainment, beautiful buildings and statues, art, shopping, historic sites, and a perfect place to do whatever you want; even if you just want to relax at a sidewalk cafe and sip a coffee.
Who needs landmarks with a lively city to explore... our favourite is at evening when the city turns on the golden hue that stretches to the horizon in every direction.

The facade images are quite enjoyable to view and help place Plaza Mayor as one of the most attractive squares in western Europe.

Its so nice, great view, lots to see
And of course there is the stupid ban on taking pictures (same as in many other sites) - means what you see will have to remain in your memory.

I've always considered Calle Mayor, which runs from Puerto del Sol to Cathedral de la Almudena, to be the perfect street to take when visiting many of Madrid's major historic sights.
On the way, some major historical landmarks, such as the Catedral de la Almudena and other interesting sites, such as Plaza Mayor and the San Miguel Market.

I feel so lucky to have been able to view many an opera and ballet because of this wonderful scheme.

The statue shows Carlos III atop a stead ,it's a major landmark on the plaza and a selfie magnet,it's beautifully detailed and popular but as a downside be careful if taking photos as many pickpockets operate here...
