Whilst we didn’t have time to do the tour of the Royal Palace as it was late in the afternoon, the outside on its own was worth the visit. The light and gardens begins with the sinking sun, just spectacular.

Visiting in proximity to Christmas, the plaza was filled with Christmas and gift stalls adding to the crowdedness of this always crowded spot. Vendors were still selling “toys with noise” and flying things-you can’t make it through without being approached. Despite the bustle of the area, this spot is not to be missed on a tour of Madrid.

The Markets are great and certainly worth a visit. They do get very busy though and it’s difficult trying to find somewhere to sit. However, the food looked amazing and we tried multiple tapas, but they looked better than they tasted. Nothing was bad, it was just style over substance. The food is expensive by comparison too.

Main Cathedral in Madrid in front of the Royal Palace. It is dedicated to the Virgin of Almudena, and its construction began in 1879, completed and consecrated by Pope John Paul II in 1993.
Among the Spanish noble members sepulchered there: Mercedes of Orleans (Queen of Spain) and Prince Ferdinand of Bavaria.

The Plaza de Oriente is a square located across from the Royal Palace. It is rectangular in shape and monumental in character and it was designed by Narciso Pascual y Colomer. The square was opened in 1844. In the same year the equestrian statue of Felipe IV was erected. The gardens were planned by Jose Bonaparte, who wanted the gardens to highlight the Palace and the Royal Theater. One of the most beautiful squares in Madrid.

Small but good gardens located to the side of the Royal Palace enroute to the Plaza de Espana and the Temple of Debod. There are some small fountains and some nice paths. Well worth a 30 minute visit.

This monastery didn't wow us as much as expected, but we love visiting monasteries with great history on vacation and we had the extra time. If limited on time, could give it a miss. It's also not easy to see. Not many private guides are equipped with it's history, fortunately we found one that was and went at reserved 10:45am time slot on a weekday recently. Only allowed to stay 45 minutes but that's plenty since it's small/only can see limited areas. Nothing too outstanding to see but nice, and we love in-depth historical places of cities, so it intrigued us. They have very limited tours done by facility in English so see if can find if not with guide.

To celebrate our wedding anniversary we attended a performance of Aida at the Teatro Real. This was the first time we had visited, we booked seats towards the front of "Paraiso" (the amphitheatre) online so wasn't sure what to expect. The seats were in fact very good, great sight lines and on an aisle which we prefer. The acoustics are superb and the production fabulous, great choreography as well as singings and interesting use of holograms. We dressed up for the occasion and many of the Spanish audience did so as well. Only small thing, we couldn't work out where and how to order interval drinks so that particular pleasure was missed but no matter.

This emblematic Baroque building in Plaza Mayor used to house the town's main bakery. It was completed in 1619. The sides of this imposing building are crowned by high angular towers.

The beautiful murals on the building's facade are relatively new. The painting of Carlos Franco's frescoes was carried out in 1992.

I’ve seen this in social media and a friend had visited prior and I just loved the cookies. So in my visit to Madrid I had to go. Going there is fairly easy (you can just Google it) and once there you will find people coming in and out so it’s fairly straight forward. The cookies are super good, don’t miss the chance to go.

Crypt just beside of Almudena Cathedral. Spanish noble family members are sepulchered inside. The entrance is free and in the lateral road just behind the Almudena Cathedral entrance.

Although it’s a splendid cathedral it’s not as impressive as most, our tour guide describes it as controversially basic but I thought it was a beautiful & interesting building from the outside and possibly looked even better at night.

This was the main reason we wanted to visit the Royal Palace was to see The Royal Armoury. It was facinating, different, and something we had not seen at other locations in our travels. I would recommend stopping and visiting if you are in madrid. It took us about 40 mins or so to view everything at our own pace.

This is a beautiful church, it’s easy to walk past this little church but well worth popping inside to have a look. It’s not alway open but if it is it’s a real treat.
