What travellers are saying
- Jeanne G8 contributionsLake Orta enchanted me by its otherworldly simplicity, isolation, winding path and that deep misty shade of blue that washed over the whole scene. It is less touristy than Como and has the added attraction of the island with a castle and monastery in the middle of the lake. Adjacent Orta San Giulio isalso a joy to explore as it has a timeless medieval ambience with narrow streets, arches, ancient structures and cobbles.Written 19 November 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Simon MuscatIsland of Malta, Malta26 contributionsIts an oddly satisfying find... a sequence of delicately placed chapels relating the story of St Francis of Assisi, perched in the woodlands on top of the mount... worth seeingWritten 17 August 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - schmidtmgSwitzerland995 contributionsIf you visit Lake Orta,do visit San Giulio Island. The boat round trip from Piazza motta in Orta San Giulio takes a few minutes, costs 5 Euro and the small boats leave every 20 minutes or so. On the island , visit the Basilica di San Giulio - in a room adjoining the crypt you can read about the history of the place, which has housed a church since the 6th century. There is a small path around the island offering nice views - incidentally called 'a voie du silence'. If there are tour groups visiting at the same time, try to stay away from them, as they will spoil the serene impression of the place....Written 30 October 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Ken WJeffersonton, VA13 contributionsThis Romanesque basilica (Basilica di San Giuio) was constructed and reconstructed over centuries on San Giulio Island ( Isola di San Giulio), located in Lake Orta in northwestern Italy. This small island is a jewel not often seen by tourists. The basilica is the most famous building on the island, but don't miss the nearby Benedictine monastery. Your trip should include a walk around this picturesque island, Boats to the island leave regularly from Orta, the lake's namesake village. While in Orta, be sure to visit the Sacro Monte, a UNESCO World Heritage site, with its 21 chapels dedicated to St. Francis.Written 10 February 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - schmidtmgSwitzerland995 contributionsPiazza Motta is the historical center of Orta San Giulio. Under the arcades lining the square on two side, you'll find little shops, cafés, souvenir shops, a foodstore (Pan e Vino), etc. On the lakeside front, boats depart to other villages along Lake Orta and to San Giulio Island. On Wednesday monring, there is a market on the square
. If you're lucky, you can rent some of the apartments overlooking the square during your stay on Lake Orta - very much recommended.Written 18 November 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Look at the lovely gardens, soak up the atmosphere of calm and maybe look at the "painting" on the easel of the resident artist.Written 4 June 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - David CTiverton, UK2,433 contributionsFine for drinks and snacks. My wife went swimming and didn't have any complaints but be warned it is geared up for young families.Written 27 June 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - nnmercmanCamberley, UK13,644 contributionsThe space underneath this raised hall is often used by artists and also holds exhibitions - on the day we visited there was a large book sale. The architecture reminded me of a similar building in Poundbury near Dorchester which was modelled on an original structure. The surrounding square throngs with tourists, cafes and ice cream parlours plus there's a great view over the lake towards the island of San Giulio and town of Pella on the far side. The island ferry shuttle and lake service depart from the jetties.Written 1 August 2017This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - SabreSailorNew York421 contributionsThis is a lovely church on the way down from the top of the mountain. Or a bit up the mountain from the middle of town! Worth a visit.Written 22 October 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- vmilmanCambridge, UK445 contributionsLove everything about it - pity one can't get on top of the tower itself. The hike goes through a couple of villages, fairly picturesque, and through hilly woods. You have to cross the rail tracks twice - once under, once over (keep to the right of the railway for the second half of the trek, or you end up following a rather busy road. Pay attention to the views as you follow the path; Monte Rosa should be seen clearly on a good day.Written 10 September 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - redecoWarren, MA9,449 contributionsMost people arriving in Orta by car will take the tram to town from the car park, and walk down the narrow streets to the main square. Chiesa di San Rocco is on the way down into the village. You can't miss it. The church is small with one main aisle. Though of seventeenth century (1631) construction, San Rocco appears to have been updated in the Italian Baroque taste as the ceiling fresco is dated 1733. There are numerous paintings lining the walls - plenty to explore while inside.
This little church is charming, and is well worth having a look. Enjoy.Written 29 November 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
