At the back side of the museum, you will find one of the most beautifull terraces of Holland, in the shadow of the St. Jan's Church, which you definately should pay a visit to.
The museum cafe is also a real pleasure.

Right across from here is a selection of popular museums as well, but the Rijks easily gathers a crowd, so come early and then take some afternoon sun in the garden right next door.
I have grown up in museums and with some very well respected art historians.

We were able to climb and enjoy all the levels in the windmill without the crowds associated with other windmill museums.
The museum includes a video history of windmills and a well preserved miller's residence and plenty of steep ladders to climb, level by level, up to see the inner workings of the mill.

BUT buy a museum year ticket (60 euro) and you can split this visit in two... and see all the other museums in the Netherlands for a year for free as well!!
'Cool Japan' is the latest of the special exhibitions hosted by the museum (from yesterday to mid-September) and it is stunning.

This house was already transformed into a museum by the last owner Paulina Bisdom van Vliet and when she died she kept strict instructions to keep it exactly the same.

Inspiring: one of my all time favourite museums.
There are many science museums elsewhere, but the Boerhaave is a very special one.

This is one of the best museums to go to to get a very good flavour of both Dutch old history as well as European and Egyptian history.
If you thought Natural History museums had to be stuffy and messy like in London and New York, think again!
Museum De Lakenhal Leiden 15.2 km away
#7 of 15 Museums in Leiden
De Lakenhal is a museum about Leiden in earlier centuries - from very old coins and equipment to the rich golden century to famous painters over the last couple of centuries.
This small museum is really well presented - about to have a major renovation.

From first glance this museum is fascinating, the giant totem outside to the visiting display of Japanese Fun gaming, I wish we had more time to browse.
We spent the next hour and a half touring this outstanding two-room museum while Sarah addressed my many questions and provided context for the time of the pilgrims.
Sieboldhuis Leiden 15.1 km away

This museum shows intricate Japanese art and daily life items of 17th century when Siebolt was a medical doctor on the iland off Japan where only the Dutch were allowed for trade with Japan.
This small museum on the Rapenburg (lovely street!) is a gem worth checking out about life in Japan in the mid 19th century.
