- MayLehmannNYCNew York City, NY1,412 contributionsDuring a recent 2-week stay on the island of Skyros, it didn't take long for us to fall in love with this quiet non-touristy island. Part of the immediate charm was walking from our rental down what we'd consider "Main Street" where all the shops were located. It was a downward walk over some well-worn slippery-at-times stones (Be careful when navigating them) which opened up to a series of cafes, restaurants, clothing and jewelry stores and a few shops which seemed appropriate for tourists. But for the most part, the main street seemed happy with limiting those "kitch" shops. Once you reach the "Main Square" which is flat and encircled on 3 sides with cafes, bars, and restaurants, the main street then continues DOWNHILL where more shops and restaurants line the street. Most of "Main Street" is closed to vehicular traffic though garbage pickups and delivery trucks were allowed, despite the extremely narrow space they have to navigate. Because Skryos seems to be "off the beaten path" for tourists, walking around this island was a pure delight. No crowds, mostly locals, and just enough restaurants and shops to keep us interested and happy over two weeks.Written 27 June 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - SchumacherJackTimmins, Canada563 contributionsHere is a long sandy beach that is probably teeming with poplin the high season, however when we walked it, it was quiet except for the lapping of the waves on shore. Quiet and clean for sureWritten 9 October 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.

- neumanthFrankfurt, Germany800 contributionsThe kids can also ride them. Nice to see them, and they seem to be looked after. There are volunteers from all over the world working on the farm. So language is no issue.Written 28 July 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- geoser68Thessaloniki Region, Greece161 contributionsA little church in the rock and direct at the sea. This area of Skyros -Gyrismata- has a very nice view of Chora and to the sea. Nearby is also a windmill.Written 8 July 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- DingoAthens, Greece27 contributionsWe arrived early one morning with our children after touring the island of Skiros following a magnificent road through the woods. There were practically no people at that time and we took a swim in the emerald waters! The children took their masks to explore the underwater. Simply loved it.Do not forget to try the fresh fish in the small taverna restaurant "i kira kali".Written 26 August 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Has beautiful crystal clear water and deepens slowly. Nice dramatic surrounding.Written 21 September 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Embers78London, UK81 contributionsOMG this was just amazing.
Ok to be clear... this is a monastery, PLEASE dress appropriately, ie cover up as much as possible. This isn't a regular church its important to be respectful. There are signs on the doors asking you to dress appropriately.
Its also a hike up to the top of the hill in the town and not an easy walk if you're not fit or if its wet.
It says its open I believe from 10-11:30 (I didn't go in the morning) and then 18-19:30 which is when I went. Please be advised this is service times.... and a service is actually running during these times, id be respectful and not turn up right at the end, or if you do, please stay in the lower area where you don't disturb the service.. I went for 18:00 and it was welcomed. I was able to sit up in the main section and listen to initially one but then two young men sing and chant in such beautiful tones that I was mesmerised, it was beautiful, there was also the priest who joined in and did his things.
I sat peacefully through the whole 90mins and it was really worth it. I got to see a beautiful service (and I am not religious) and it gave me time to look at the beautiful decor/interior (ive never seen anything so incredible).
At the end the priest spoke to me in greek, one of the other men interpreted and he was asking where I was from. I explained the UK and that I was very thankful to have been part of the service and he thanked me for attending and said it was open to all and I was very welcome.
This is one of those places thats is just so worth seeing, but be respectful!!

Both are mostly sandy. Interesting for snorkeling.Written 27 August 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - ikar_tom45Europe172 contributionsJust average beach, big in size and made mostly of fine sand and a little bit of pebbles. Unfortunately it was affected by strong wind and waves during our visit so we had to leave.Written 11 August 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Ricky AQiryat Ata, Israel76 contributionsI was amazed of some Bronze age bronze articles, including safery pins very similar to modern ones. Also painted pottery and other small statues etc in very good condition. These are articles of a very progressive civilization 4000-5000 years ago. All the items were excavated in this island.Written 10 September 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- 69sheenNorwich, UK61 contributionsVery small quiet island … tavernas and shops closed between 2:30 and 18:00 not come across that for a long time. We hired a car and explored all the island most beaches empty. I understand the season doesn’t start till June and doesn’t last long. - SchumacherJackTimmins, Canada563 contributionsSo we went off to find this tiny piece of history but along the way we discovered beautifully stark landscapes with unequaled scenery. The thousands of wild free range goats were everywhere. Such cute creatures with every single one of them looking different (unlike sheep) with their amazing colours, coat texture and length and of course those gnarly horns. The wild Skyrian Horses that also roam this area free and unfettered, are beautiful creatures and unaffected by our presence. Ahhh, but on to Rupert's Grave. A spectacular setting in a gultch and grove. It's location is a little odd but I guess it gets the tourists, like ourselves, to see some otherwise unvisited land. Definitely worth the effort to get there.Written 8 October 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
