Broch of Gurness Evie
#1 of 7 Museums in Mainland
Small but informative museum in visitor centre.
The Orkney Museum Kirkwall
#2 of 7 Museums in Mainland
We visited Orkney in January when the majority of museums and attractions on the island are closed so we were happy to find this one in Kirkwall and it was free which is always appreciated!
Unlike some small museums this one was logically laid out with uncluttered displays in date order from ancient times to current day.
Stromness Museum Stromness
#3 of 7 Museums in Mainland
The cabinets are a bit ancient but how lovely to wander about and discover hidden gems, a contrast from some of the slick museums of today.
Better than many larger museums we have visited
Pier Arts Centre Stromness
#4 of 7 Museums in Mainland
It is an art gallery and a museum and was established in 1979 to provide a home for an important collection of fine art donated to by the author and peace activist Margaret Gardiner.
This beautiful small museum has probably the best collection of British Modernists, outside London.
Orkney Wireless Museum Kirkwall
#5 of 7 Museums in Mainland
This is one of the smallest museums I've ever visited but there is so much crammed into a tiny space.
When we visited the Orkney Wireless Museum, we were amazed at the range of the wirelesses on display, ranging from early crystal sets, domestic, wartime and military.
Corrigall Farm Museum Harray
#6 of 7 Museums in Mainland
In my opinion this is the best of the two Farm Museums, it has a traditional Peat fire and some amazing period furniture and dress.
Loads of simmilarities with the other farm museum.Again, great guide/curator, good stories and knowledge shared.Loved the peat fire and the spirit of the place.
