A small Plaza, not overwhelming or a long walk. A good hub from which to explore the rest of Volterra. Fun shops, Gelato everywhere, and restaurants enough. Had a splendid afternoon there, before moving on to San Gimignano. The Etruscan Museum was interesting, too, and the Roman amphitheater was interesting. Very enjoyable drive to Volterra, and beautiful countryside. Loved it!

It was basically a one hour refuge when it started to rain during our visit to the wonderful town of Volterra. For just €5 it proved a surprisingly interesting visit. A great collection of art and porcelain, and in every room there are some amazing things to discover. Certainly worth a visit!

lovely little church in this beautiful town. Does not take long to look around it but worth a visit when you are in the town.

Instead of wandering around the ruins, walk within the wall of town to the panorama of the Teatro from above and see the huge views including the Arno Valley and in the distance La Spezia Bay.

Palazzo dei Priori is the town hall in Volterra, a medieval city in Tuscany Region, in the center of Italy. This building was built in 13th Century and firstly it was used as a house for elders, after it was used as the government of the city or wise council. Really, this main facade located in the Piazza dei Priori is wonderful and you can enter and see some rooms used nowadays as town hall and municipal offices. Very interesting building.

Walking through the gate you can't stop thinking about all these people who had built it centuries ago. And then you think about the ancient Romans who would also walk through the same gate and think about all these people who had built it centuries before the Rome was even built!
    Amazing transcendental experience.

Enjoy a wonderful treat by visiting this Alabaster workshop and store. So many wonderful and well-priced items for gifts (or yourself) along with a walk downstairs into the laboratory.

Hidden between streets. I like it as it reminds me Sienna.

Very interesting stone town on top of a hill. There are remains from the Etruscans, from Ancient Rome, from the Middle Ages. There is a lot to see.

The ancient, simple church was built for Franciscan monks in the 13th century. It is a plain stone building with interesting interior, containing paintings made by Daddi, Balducci and Naldini, among others. Sadly, the most famous paintings, those from Signorelli and Fiorentino are now kept in other museums.

Yes most of the fortress is the local prison, but contrary to the other reviews you can visit the Maschio Tower which features in some of the photos from earlier reviews. It’s not open all the time though so check the website. Worth a visit though as it has a great view over the town, even if the window grates spoil the photos! You access from the east side of the town by Porta a Selci and by walking up Via di Castello. Don’t be put off by the fact you have to walk past the entrance to the prison!

The park is Ok, and at the highest point there are remains of the Etruscans. There is not much left to watch and they want a green pass. .

An interesting small church with a remarkable frescoed ceiling. It is said to have been built on the site of the house of the second Pope. It was empty during my visit.

As part of a private cheese and olive oil tour, we stopped at the lovely farmhouse and olive oil press near Volterra. They are starting to get ready for the next harvest and we learned all about the differences between olive oil productions across Europe. Don’t be fooled by the fakes! This olive oil was amazing and I’ll never be able to go back to the knock offs that we think are good for us. I would love to go back during October and November when all the farmers gather to get there olives pressed! Worth getting on the mailing list to order the next batch!
