... ruins of Spain extravaganza, I had chosen Medina as part of our roman tour after seeing the BBCs history of the toilet documentary This UNESCO world heritage site is amazing, one of the most complete I have seen.
A ticket for 15 euros gives you access to around 8 different sites, including the fantastic old Alcazaba, Circo Romano, Casa Mitreo and others, as well as the Teatro and Ampiteatro.
Roman Bridge Merida
#2 of 22 Sights & Landmarks in Merida
It's good to walk across it and to view it from the nearby Alcazaba moorish fort where you can climb the battlements and look down and across the river.
Amazing views of the city from this wonderful place.

Beautifully restored entrance and rooms and superb 360 degree views highlight the strategic nature of the place.
The view out over Elvas and Spain beyond, give an idea of the forts purpose, as well as an amzing view of the town and the astonishing working aqueduct that still supplies it.

Lots of photo opportunities, great views from the fortifications around Elvas give different perspectives of the aqueduct!
Elvas is a remarkable city and this site just makes even so much more spectacular.

They are everywhere and the Templo de Diana is only one of the sites of the Archaelogical Ensemble of Merida that was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1993.
We were too late to see the central historical site that had the Roman theatre etc., and so were disappointed, but we walked into the town and there in the middle of town was the Temple of Diana, free for all to s...

Aside from the archeological/historical significance of the site, an outstanding characteristic of the aqueduct is the colony of nesting storks seen atop many of the pillars!
The view of this architectural gem from the park is much better and I really recommend it.Nice green areas, clean paths, and an exercise place for the elderly as well.

Vila Vicosa Castle Vila Vicosa, Portugal 44.1 km away

The castle offers great views of the Alentejo landscape and the hunting and guns museums are great.

Alcazaba Merida
#10 of 22 Sights & Landmarks in Merida
Excellent information, great views, some paths a little tricky but otherwise a superb monument beautifully presented and lovingly looked after
From the wall there is a fabulous view right across the Roman Bridge (the longest one extant) and there are also explanations for the various different parts and stages of the Alcazaba.
#11 of 22 Sights & Landmarks in Merida
The visit also includes the Columbarios, a Roman burial ground with funerary monuments and other grave stones as well as an exhibition about the Roman view of death
#1 of 3 Sights & Landmarks in Medellin
The views are beautiful and the history is amazing.
#5 of 55 Sights & Landmarks in Elvas
You can climb around 50 steps to reach a viewpoint offering magnificent views of the city and its surroundings - for me, even better than the views from the castle.
This tiny chapel, with the internal octagonal walls covered in beautiful tile work, offers you an option to climb to its top, where you'll have nice views from citadel.
#12 of 22 Sights & Landmarks in Merida
Fantastic close up views.
If also allows you free entry to a few other sites in this historic city.
