- BTS1972Munich, Germany3,730 contributionsThe waterfalls are simply beautiful and majestic. But to enjoy them in full, you need to arrive before the Chinese do. Then, it gets loud and overcrowded. There, better get up pretty early. It is worth the effort.Written 1 December 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - JourneyerMiami Beach, FL1,386 contributionsRice is a staple foundational food not only in Laos but in many other countries; each country has its specialty, in Laos, it is sticky rice. At Living Land Community Farm we participate in the thirteen-step process for two crops per year that rural subsistence farms today still use. We play rice farmer as we learn to select seeds, plant, plow, and consume the final product. Our guide makes it lots of fun. When I pause and let each step sink into my body I realize how physically demanding it is, how much patient consistent attention to the crop over time is required, and how it takes a village to plant and harvest. Eating rice will never be the same.
Proceeds from the Rice Experience support over 60 students with their studies, and they operate free English classes for the whole village. So, the experience doubles as helping a good cause.
This experience, including lunch, is one of the highlights of our visit to Laos. The videos being screened are similar too.Written 25 November 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Andrew YSingapore, Singapore5,138 contributionsNormally I would rate such a place 5 Stars as it is a "must do." Phousi dominates the Luang Prabang skyline and if you haven't been up there, it is like you have not been to LP. So you need to climb up at least once. I went up by the Palace route in the morning and there was some crowd but not overly crowded. It gets very crowded when hordes of tourists arrive, especially on the Palace side. The views at the top is excellent and well worth the climb. Temples are for praying and not for rating so I have no comments on that. There are three routes to the summit (Palace, Wat Pha Khe, Nam Khan River) My advice is to climb by the Wat Pha Khe route as it is just down the road from the Palace. The entrance is hidden behind some shops so it is not easy to find. The Wat Pha khe route will join with the nam Khan River route at the pay booth. Going by this road up you can find the small cave (just behind the pay booth), the Reclining Buddha and the Buddha footprint. You cannot see all these by the Palace Route. You can descend by the Palace route if you want to see the Naga protecting the Buddha statue.
Locals suggested that I see the sunset from Phousi but reading the reviews here I am glad that I didn't as there will be hundreds of people up there. I watched sunset by sipping beer from one of the riverside restaurants and another time I did the sunset cruise. Both were amazing.Written 26 November 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Each Buddha makes you reflect on a piece of yourself and marvel at the effort to create such remarkable statues. The hidden beauty in each one is lovely and all the flowers make this park worth the time spent. Nice bathrooms and some snack/drink options.Written 3 November 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- James M6 contributionsAmazing trip. Did a half day tour, was organised very well and had a great time. From start to finish the whole experience was good. You can tell the staff really care about the welfare, education and promotion of the elephants and they are doing a great job. I would highly recommend this and also it helps support their efforts to educate and repopulate wild elephants in SE Asia.Written 10 December 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Doc BokVientiane, Laos255 contributionsWhile this is obviously here for tourists, it's a great place to shop for souvenirs and try out local street food. At one end there is a large square with many food stalls from around the world so you can get a taste of home after taking the slow boat. On Fridays/Saturdays they have live bands here, which gives it a lively atmosphere.Written 3 December 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Andrew YSingapore, Singapore5,138 contributionsWhile this temple is historically and symbolically very important, the temple itself was destroyed by wars and this is a 20th century reconstruction. This temple is on the tourist itinerary so it may get crowded. Laotian Kings are required to be crowned at Wat Xieng Thong but the last king, Sisavang Vatthana, did not do so for some reason. The temple is decorated with mosaics with meaningful stories (e.g. Parables of Siaosawat, a Laotian hero).
There is a golden statue of a monk that a China Tour guide said is a mummified monk but I could not verify.Written 26 November 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - BTS1972Munich, Germany3,730 contributionsYou have to get up early to see the local monks walking to get their daily rations and gifts from the town's inhabitants.
