William Shakespeare in Hamlet once said `There are more things in heaven and earth than are dreamt of in your philosophy.' Even in the biblical world, things are also evolving fast beyond our prediction. In Singapore, orthodox and traditional denominational churches are losing their steam and appeal and many had witnessed a migration of their young followers to the modern mega churches.

I had not attended Sunday services at any of the mega churches. There is this New Creation Church at Star Vista located beside the Buona Vista MRT. This morning, I decided to visit the church to attend their Sunday service and have a look of this mega church . It was a half hour walk from my house from Queenstown via the rail corridor.

The Sunday service is held at the Performing Arts Theatre at the upper floor of Star Vista mall. The mall itself is non-air conditioned and eco-friendly and more than a dozen shops and eateries operated at the lower few floors making it very convenient and accessible for church goers to consume their breakfast or lunch before proceeding to attend the church services. There is also a CS Fresh supermarket and the eateries include the well-known Boon Tong Kee Chicken Rice, the Canton Paradise; Texas Chicken, Imakatsu, Akimitsu Ramen & Tendon, Crave, Nam Kee Pau, Four Leaves confectionary, etc.

The traditional denominational churches tend to be standalone structures with no F & B amenities. I also noticed coffee carts at the lobby area and coffee and tea beverages are catered free for churchgoers. The coffee beverages include Black Coffee, Espresso, Americano, Cappuccino, Cafe Latte and Earl Grey or Apple Camomie Tea.

I was shocked to see the crowd in the auditorium. The seating capacity of the theater is 5,000 people and almost every seat was occupied. The seats are comfortable and the stage was modern, lustrous and decorative. There were ushers standing by at the alleys to direct you to vacant seats as if I was coming for a cinema show or concert.

The sound effect and acoustics were perfect and I really enjoyed listening to the songs and music. When Pastor Joseph Prince delivered his motivational sermons and conducted the healing sessions, the quality of the sound system was perfect and his voice was clear and charismatic. I was like an audience viewing a concert entertainment performance. The air-conditioned environment and the theatrical atmosphere and ambience made me very comfortable and relaxed.

I was free to move about. There was no `harassment' or any one trying to force me to accept Christ with any persistent evangelistic effort. As a first time goer, I could easily discern the marked difference between a traditional denominational church and this mega church. Church services in commercial spaces, the theatrical performance arts atmosphere and ambience, the air-conditioned and conducive environment and the approach in sermons all contribute to the success factors of these mega churches.

I love to visit various kind of church. After visiting National Museum Singapore, along the road to Fort Canning Park, you will see this church! It is one of the oldest Methodist church in Singapore, which survived after WWII. The interior of the sanctuary is stunning, all wooden decor and the spiritual ambience, it is just a wonderful place to worship. Solemn. WOW.

I often like to stop into the smaller churches from the last century when I travel. This was a nice one just near the Dhoby Ghaut MRT station. It is on the way to Fort Canning Park
