Korcula, is the largest island in the archipelago and home to a medieval town. The 22-mile-long island has a population of around 16,000, with 3,000 in the port town itself. Needless to say, the island is a tourist town, but there were not an overabundant of such today. There are also a number of sail boats (some VERY BIG with three masts, so I guess I need to call those SHIPS).

The water along the shore is very clear, but any beach area is covered with small pebbles (verses sand). They say this is typical of the whole coast.
Into the heart of historic Korcula town, which, among other things, has been the center of proud music and dance traditions such as the warrior-like Moreska sword dancers (no we did not see any today).
By going into the convoluted streets of the old town, the strong winds of the BUDDA were moderated and disappeared.
Rumor has it that this location was the birthplace of Marco Polo.
We visited a local 16 century palace of the bishop, that is now a museum. FYI back long ago the bishop was also the mayor / political leader authority of the Town = Lots of FAMILY politics here!
We were told this town for centuries was ruled by Venice, and if you have watched the Netflix series “The Borges”, you may have picked up on how the church’s Bishop ran things (sometimes fairly / sometimes “not so fairly”)

Korcula Island is a wonderful place located in Dalmatian Coast, in Croatia. Here, you can see some places like Korcula city, an amazing Venetian-style town, where you can enjoy a lot seeing some buildings or visit museums, towers, churches or only walk in this fantastic old town; also you can visit some wineries (like Vitis Winery), where you can taste homemade wines and see wonderful views of the surroundings; beaches like Bačva Beach or Pupnatska Luka Beach, which are very nice, the other town, Vela Luka, in the opposite side of the island, where you can see churches, a leisure port, a megalithic cave or places, where oil is manufactured. All is a fantastic experience!

An absolutely wonderful family winery. There is family history in growing the grapes in Korcula and mastering their winemaking. Our server, who is part of the family, poured 3 wines - all were wonderful. This little winery is a must when you are on Korcula Island. It is easy to get to from Old Town. Grab a water taxi to Lumbarda and walk up the hill. Don't forget to buy some wine to take with you.

The detailed Romanesque portal by Bonino of Milano depicting Adam and Eve on either side and St. Mark perched at the top.

Inside the cathedral it was very detailed (WOW have we viewed a lot of the insides of churches in our travels). I love the architecture of churches as they reflect the passion of those that are looking for that quest of “everlasting life” (do not want to relate / accept that everything STOPS at death).

What shocked me the most was the Cathedral had 9 different altars, and not that much of a seating inventory.
The 16th-century painting by Tintoretto above the main altar was very impressive.

This church also has a sketch by Da Vinci, drawings by Raphael, and paintings by Italian masters (no pictures allowed of that one).

Went into the small All Saints’ Church and noted all the crypt slabs covering the floor. Turns out the rich & influential were buried beneath the floor of the church (following a donation $$), so pensioners can read their names as the masses walk over their graves (the more money you donate, the closer to the alter or entrance = gets you planted there). Wonder if they realized their graves will most likely be opened in about another 300 years or so by grave robber archeologist to see how many teeth the deceased had.

Pupnatska Luka Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in Korcula Island, which is located in Dalmatian Coast, in Croatia. It is a pebble beach, where you can see very nice views of the coast, the mountains, and obviously the sea. We came here at the end of October, so we could not bathe or sunbathe, but we could do a little walk and see the views. Very nice and relaxing place in low season.

What a little gem in the middle of Korcula Island. It's easy to get to from Old Town. I took the water taxi from Old Town to Lumbarda (about 45 minutes on the small boat that made 2 stops along the way at other islands) and then once in Lumbarda I walked up to Vitus Winery. I waited outside and met others waiting for Vitus to open from 1-3 pm. It was the end of the season with limited hours and open days and I was fortunate to get to this winery and taste their GRK (white), Rose, and a red. I typically don't drink Rose, but your Rose and the other 2 wines were absolutely amazing and yummy. We were served by the winemakers daughter who poured and explained all 3 wines. She was so pleasant.

Thank-you for a lovely visit, view, and wine tasting. Now if only I could buy your GRK white in the U.S.! When I come back to Croatia, I will have to stop in and buy a few bottles of GRK to take back with me.

The island was well worth the visit by water taxi but beware no open toilets or anywhere to buy drink or food so go prepared. Both Resturants & Kiosk were closed. Taxi was also every hour instead of 30 minutes when we visited first week in October.
We did the stunning circular walk round the island which took about an hour 20 minutes. The path was wide and well defined all the way round but surprisingly not well advertised. Didn't have time for the Monistry or energy to walk to the top to see the old Church which apparently had stunning views of the surrounding islands. You could easily spend a day there with easy access beeches but just go prepared.

I just wanted to take the water taxi to the center of Korcula Island. I walked to the ferry dock from Old Town and then asked if the water taxi would take me to Lumbarda. They told me the fare and time to leave and I purchased a round trip ticket. The boat left on time and stopped at 2 islands to drop off and pickup people and then stopped at Lumbarda reminding us when the last boat left to return back to Korcula Old Town.

Once I arrived in Lumbarda, I then walked to 2 wineries (Vitus and Popic) to wine taste, met people along the way and at the wineries, and walked back down the path to the dock where the water taxi took me back to Old Town. It was a lovely way to travel versus taking the motor taxi and a great afternoon.

If your journey takes you to Lumbarda, on island of Korčula, do not miss the Lovrić winery and its Grk, the best in the world. The other wines we tried were also excellent. With the pleasant company of the owner and the waitress, we had a pleasant time.

A port of call on our Aegean Cruise, Korcula is a beautiful, albeit small, old city. Narrow streets full of bars, Restaurants and shops, the atmosphere is fantastic.
    High;y recommended.

Would have been 5 stars but we came on Sunday and had the most amazing day, crystal clear water and loads of fish for snorkelling! 3 days later they are dredging the sea bed to put more sand on the beach which has resulted in murky water. There may be a reason but finding it hard to understand why this could not have been done off season. To the previous reviewer, yes there are more beautiful beaches in Scotland but the weather stinks. Who wants to hit the beach in the rain. This place is perfect for families especially early season, just don’t dredge when you want people to use the beach.
