What travellers are saying
- Tucson_AZAdventurer198 contributionsThe whole area was peaceful. The views of the snow on Mt Graham were beautiful! The bathrooms were very clean. However, work on sewer pipes will begin soon so maybe check prior to visiting in respect to noise.Written 23 February 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Lorrie M3 contributionsIf you are into rock hounding, this is your mountain. Lots of agates, and if you're lucky, maybe a little fire. - CMPTexasTucson, AZ835 contributionsWhile we were camping in the area, we turned north on US Hwy 191 to go to the Gila Box Riparian Area. You'll head north and east on a well pave two-lane road for about 3 miles or so until you get to a viewing area on a mesa overlooking the Gila River. Spectacular view! You can go further on the road to picnic areas off the roadway, but BEWARE, much of the roadway AFTER the viewing area is narrow and oftentimes only capable of handing one way traffic. I had to back up on a steep hill to allow another vehicle to go by, as he was already coming down the hill. Narrow road with steep hills and inclines, go slowly. Interesting area and very pretty; nature at it's best.Written 27 April 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - oldryderOrlando, FL71 contributionsABSOLUTE MUST SEE FOR ASTRONOMY GEEKS! All day event with very limited availability so plan ahead. We tried to schedule but tour was booked on day we wanted. Called day before and were able to go due to cancellations! Short video, 1.5 hours to summit. Three telescopes, one "smaller" but still huge optical, one radio telescope, and "Large Binocular Telescope" which is presently the largest on the planet. Toured all three. got to talk to staff. 1.5 hours back down the mountain. Schedule well in advance and call back if it's already booked.Written 6 June 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - DutchkathyZaltbommel, The Netherlands1,332 contributionsWe had a hard time finding the entrance. The address say Discovery Park Blvd but it's entrance is on the far end of the South 20th Avenue. We were greeted very kindly by the docent and administrator. He showed us where the displays were, started up the simulation Space shuttle flight and made the video room ready for us. It was small but interesting. Unfortunatelly we were not able to go to the observatory itself but the ride in the space shuttle and movie made up for that. He later showed us a small road to the lower part of the park where we fed his crackers to the ducks, saw some fish too. We recommend this park to everybody, go see and experience it.Written 5 October 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Eric B1 contributionI have love this place since I was a Kid. When my GrandFather would take me up there usually by Horse. Telling me how when he was a young boy he would drive cattle from his Dad"s Ranch near Winkelmen to their place in Klondike. It used to be a Great view of the Valley. My Mother's Family being the first to settle here after the Civil War where they they staked a Claim before anyone under the Homestead Act.. What now is San Jose and beyond . The town of Sanchez which has the first school in AZ and the First Post Office. The Mormons and The Mining Company have been trying to take it from them since they have arrived. You once could look at the Valley and the Beautiful Black Hills at one time from here. Now all you can Look at is the destruction and wiping out of the Black Hills from the New Mine as well as the once Great Gila River reduced to a very small river because of how much water the Mine Uses. It's Very Sad to See and Realizes how much has been destroyed here. Wonder when the Towns of Pima,Thatcher and Safford will be engulf by this Mine like the Town of Morenci as been time and time again so that Mine can become bigger. Soon very soon I think.Written 22 June 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Cherry_WonderdogNew England3,155 contributionsThis was a great trail to do at the end of the day. After driving what seemed like 50 miles uphill to nearly 9000 feet altitude, we reached the trailhead which led up even further up to the summit of Mount Safford. There were switchbacks, and – thanks to all the driving – the entire trail to the summit lasted about half a mile, so it wasn’t as steep, strenuous, or as long as most typical trails. And the terrain was far different than in the desert down below – here it felt a bit like New England. Lots of tall pines, changing foliage in the distance, and yes, the eerie feeling that we might encounter a black bear rummaging for berries.
That being said, Cherry Wonderdog recommends bear bells or at least making enough noise so as not to surprise any massive furry creatures expectedly. Additionally, be prepared for colder temperatures. It was at least 20 degrees colder at the top than down in Safford from which we started.
On the trip up, my hawk of a son noticed a couple tarantulas crossing the road, so we got a few nice shots of them meandering their way in open territory.
Vistas on Ladybug Peak were fabulous.

Nancy booked the appointment and took the time to tell me all of the options. You can also book online without having to speak with anyone.
Alex met me at the front desk with a smile and presented my towel with a Jeol Korean bow. The staff was amazing and the services were beyond compare. I plan to go again and will have a little more time to explore the essential oils and gifts for sale!
This is a true gem in the desert! OH and if you are feeling adventurous, ask for your mineral soak to be outside back by this quaint pond where you can paddle board or swim. - ka4lhsTucson, AZ219 contributionsThe road is in good shape, it is tight with switchback and no guardrails. Still a lot of snow on the mountains. Great views and very peaceful. It is open to Hospital Flats. The views great, the traffic was low. The now started about 8,000 feet. The road is closed just beyond Hospital Flats.Written 30 March 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Tucson_AZAdventurer198 contributionsWhy did I wait so long to return!? Small campground type area with a few cabins that resemble tough sheds. All the soaking you like in the mineral hot tubs when you stay. The 3 bathrooms are clean. The outdoors does make its way indoors. We stayed 2 days and met very friendly people. It would have been helpful to have a shorter table with regular chairs to eat at. (All the tables are high with high chairs) Not easy for shorter folks that wish to eat inside. Clarissa (actually all the people) is so very friendly.Written 23 February 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
