We had a very fun tour with Susan and two other couples in the afternoon on a rainy day. She was very knowledgeable about the history of the house and we had a very nice tour. She also knows a lot about Galena in general and what is going on in the town.

The artwork in the gallery is absolutely beautiful and well priced. The gallery has many options that you may to choose to purchase, from framed photos, hanging art, postcards, mounted art on stone, etc. Definitely a must visit locale.

Our day here started with the Alpine slide ride down to the Mississippi boat ride. The alpine slide was actually on my "must do" list and it was worthwhile, although not as exciting or fast as I anticipated. We were instructed to use our brakes around corners which, after the fact, was not needed at all. It was fun though. We had a beautiful day for the boat ride and enjoyed being on the water. The guide and driver did a nice job in keeping us informed about what we were seeing, and also gave many facts about the animals/furs around the area, and about the land and how it was formed. When I needed a rest from all the information I went outside to enjoy the sun and water. Afterwards we took the ski lift up which was interesting, walked to a peak for the review, and then had lunch in the restaurant. I would definitely recommend visiting Chestnut Mountain Resort.

My wife and I have toured the Washburne House State Historic Site on two occasions. It is one of the most interesting homes in Galena, Illinois, along with Ulysses S. Grant's house and the Belvedere Mansion. Located at 908 3rd Street, off Route 20, steps from the bridge that spans the Galena River and the entrance to downtown Galena, it was the home of Elihu Benjamin Washburne, a prominent Galena lawyer who served in the U.S. Congress during the Civil War and was U.S. Secretary of State and Minister to France under President Ulysses S. Grant. Washburne was close friends with Grant, another famous resident of Galena, and Abraham Lincoln. It was in the parlor of the Washburne house that Grant came on the night of the 1868 presidential election to learn that he had been elected. Constructed in 1844-1845, the 1 1/2-story building was built in the Greek Revival style and features a two-story porch with four fluted Doric columns. The guided tour includes the first floor and two second-floor bedrooms. The house is furnished to reflect the mid-19th century life of a well-to-do midwestern professional. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. Administered by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency, the house is open to the public from 1 to 4 on Friday and 10 to 1 on Saturday. Strange house, perhaps. But it is worth the slight annoyance. Just to stand in the room where Grant sat and learned he had been elected president is a thrilling experience.

Art draws out personal reveries. Distant memories rush back. Did not expect metalwork to be so evocative.

This was by far my favorite thing we did in Galena. The goats were friendly and loved to be pet and scratched. The yoga class was wonderful too, but I certainly found myself spending most of the time interacting with the goats at my feet. The studio is lovely - heated floors were great in the winter! I will definitely be back!

We were driving past on the way from Chestnut Mountain Resort and decided to stop. It is free, interesting and has a beautiful view. There was some information about the aera, but I wish they would have had more explaining the sun dial in the middle and some of the area views. Definitely worth stopping at if you are nearby but I don't know if I would make a special trip.

Ordinarily, the place to begin a visit to Galena, Illinois, is the Old Market House, which serves as the historic town's welcome center. Located at 123 North Commerce Street, a block from Main Street, which is Galena's mecca for restaurants and specialty shops and art galleries and boutiques and bookstores, the brick building in the Greek Revival style was built in 1845 and once served as city hall and enclosed a farmer's market. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. In past years, my wife and I always stopped at the welcome center to obtain up-to-date information on events and new restaurants and bed-and-breakfasts and specialty shops and browse through the many historical exhibits, artifacts and memorabilia. So imagine our disappointment when we arrived in Galena for our recent three-day getaway only to discover that the welcome center was closed for "revitalization" with no date for reopening. One thing is for certain: Galena is the kind of town that needs a welcome center to provide tourists with information on what to see and when to see it and where to eat and where to sleep. Surely, the new version of the Old Market House or Galena Welcome Center will provide it. As it always has in the past.

We picked a cold day to walk at Casper Bluff Land and Water Reserve - but it was beautiful and awesome to see the Thunderbird effigy.
