Admired this floodlit from the river as we passed on our river trip a nd as I was feeling lazy went on the short walk from the quay to the chateau while my wife took the tour into Arles. An impressive and relaxing morning in this castle with good signage and explanations. I was a little inhibited by my mobility issues (slow on stairs though not incapable) and like so many which suffered from the revolution of 1789 there is little internal furniture. However it is well worth the visit, especially if you have soem period/area knowledge.

The rain cleared just as we arrived, having seen the stunning abbey as we were driving up.
We weren’t sure what we could do or visit so just wandered in past the school, past the closed shop, past the closed basilique and up and around the abbey.
Had a great view from the hill behind and the whole time we were there, we didn’t see a soul (!).
Very peaceful, especially in the rain.

Visiting this small church was a wonderful experience! The Gothic interior is filled with reminiscences about the life of Martha who is noted for helping the villagers get rid of a beast (a dragon) whose sculpture is seen in the riverside park across from the church. The church had very large oil paintings, painted in the 1700s, on the side walls, each showing one important event in Martha's life - her escape from Roman persecution in Palestine, her teaching the villagers in Tarascon about Christ, her capture of the beast, her death and funeral. One of the 12 gated side chapels had a sculpted marble effigy (1660's) of a recumbent Martha. On a shelf in this cubicle was a copy ( 19C) of the magnificent gold reliquary that was once filled with jewels by Louis XI in 15C, but melted down by the Arles Revolutionaries. See several images of Martha in the stained glass windows around the altar, in the keystone of an arch, and a small window.

Very memorable was my visit to her crypt in the lower Church. It was fascinating to see how those limestone steps leading down to the basement had become worn by the many pilgrams, royalty, and ecclesiastics coming to pray to Saint Martha in the Medieval Ages. The bas reliefs carved onto the sides of the sarcophagus placed at the front of this lower church showed scenes from the Old and New Testament.

The church also has a polychrome organ case from the 1700s and a collection of reliquary boxes in a chapel near the altar. One such box holds a thorn from Christ's crown which was given to this church by Pope Benedict XIV, 1700's.

Be sure to pick up the very informative and well-done leaflet, available in English, at the entrance of the church which shows where items of interest are on the layout of the church's interior.

The entrance to the church is on a side door. Look up to see the sculptures of rams, birds, and cattle heads on the corbels above the door and gargoyles at the base of the spire. i spent about 1 hour on this visit.

Surrounded by olive groves, at the foot of Les Alpilles, ideal for à day out this chapel is closed most of the time. For visits, ask the tourist bureau in Tarascon, facing the magnificent castle.
The architecture is extremely simple but sophisticated and worthwhile à stop. Easy car park at the bottom of the steps.

We made it a point to walk from Chateau Tarascon down to the Porte Condamine, one of the last existing city gates into, or out of the old village center of Tarascon. Be sure to bring your camera as you walk the quiet city streets to this magnificent old gate.

Wandered in and as they asked, we gave feedback about how useless we felt Musée Souleiado was.
The two ladies pretended to be interested but got very defensive.
After a while, when another tourist walked in, the lady we were talking to just walked off and left us.
We started to leave and said that they had the same attitude as the lady at Souleiado.
She then pointed to a gold star in the window, as if that meant anything to us! They actually did have a leaflet about Musée Souleiado, though nobody seems to have told the museum itself, who said they didn’t have one! Incroyable!
Think these ladies should take some training from some of the other tourist offices we visited on this trip … maybe not Montélimar though …

The owner, Matt, picked me up at the Tarascon train station, took me to his amazing home (10 minutes away), let me pick my favorite from his selection of beautiful motorcycles, handed me a quality helmet and gloves, and lead me on a 4-hour tour of the local back roads. It was a great ride and I so enjoyed the Triumph 1200.
The afternoon was the absolute highlight of my trip to the Avignon area.
Matt even took me back to Tarascon and pointed me toward a nice walk through the old city on the way back to the train station.

Matt and his wife, Anne, also have 3 rentals on their lovely country home site. Had I known, I would have stayed there and ridden more.
    'Forever grateful. I'll be back!!
