What travellers are saying
- Cherry_WonderdogNew England4,986 contributionsRiverwalk had been recommended to us in Chapel Hill by people from Cary who knew the area. One of the reasons that we loved Hillsborough was this winding, paved, four-mile trail meant for riding and walking that extended itself in many places to key attractions downtown. There were historical markers, beautiful scenery and vistas, and friendly runners and walking pedestrians who came for exercise and a break from it all. Cherry Wonderdog looks forward to returning soon on bike.Written 25 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - jpete02Lansing, MI993 contributionsThe grounds and the exterior of the house are the main things to see here as the interior of the house is closed for tours. Not sure if it is closed due to Covid or if they ever plan to reopen the interior.
The house is beautifully proportioned and one of the finest houses of the very early 1800’s in the South. A nice one mile loop walk that goes along the Eno river and a pond is a restful activity on a nice day. This was a plantation during its day but none of the outbuildings are left.
No bathroom facilities or trash cans on the grounds but they do have a few picnic tables.Written 28 March 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Fall colors would be breathtaking. Emo River offers fishing along with two onsite ponds.Written 4 April 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - TwoBillsDansville, NY69 contributionsWe hiked April's Trail through woods. Trail was well marked and was near fields and lake/pond. There were others there but not many. The hike was not strenuous but gradual up and down. There were not places to sit and rest which would have been nice. There were picnic tables around the pond. It was very pretty. BTW the address is right but location on TripAdvisors map was north of Hillsborough and it should have been south of HIllsborough.Written 17 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Sheldon KHillsborough, NC28 contributionsIn addition to being a beautiful, well maintained park, it is adjacent to the Eno River Walkway, which is spectacular.Written 2 August 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Cherry_WonderdogNew England4,986 contributionsThis is THE place to go first when you visit Hillsborough. Cherry Wonderdog came here with his better half to get the lay of the land. There was a young lad who gave us a brief but informative description of the town, its demographics, and key attractions. The house, itself, is old and historic. Parking in front was free. The gorgeous Riverwalk was two blocks away. Highly recommended.Written 25 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Douglas FBurlington, NC209 contributionsThis is a well kept cemetery full of those who helped establish the United States of America as well as this part of North Carolina.
I happened upon this cemetery by accident, and I am glad I took the time to walk through. It is not every day that one can see the grave of one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, and one such patriot is interred here.Written 5 August 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Betty EHillsborough, NC125 contributionsSt Mary's Chapel is a great place to see from the road. It is on St. Mary's Road which in itself has history as there is a ghostly tale about St Mary's Road and the Chapel. Once in a while they will open the Chapel but that you have to find out when. I pass this Chapel almost every day and am in awe of the history that surrounds it.Written 8 May 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - vlhinkennKennesaw, GA13 contributionsThe object of my stop at the Burwell School was to see the place that Elizabeth Keckley had worked as a slave for a few years before buying her freedom. Keckley went on to become Mary Todd Lincoln's personal dressmaker and friend while in the White House. Her story is part of the tour, but there is much more to the history of the school and the Burwells. Stories about the girls that were educated here are included, as well as a mini lesson on the origins of some of North Carolina's oldest colleges and universities. Wonderful tour!Written 19 June 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
