- tasckalHilton Head, South Carolina102 contributionsI had one of the best experiences I've ever had. I took a beginner fly fishing lesson from Kelly at RiverGirl. She spent the perfect amount of time explaining the gear and how it relates to fishing. I learned how to tie the proper knots to attach a fly and connect the line then spent time practicing the different casting technique before we headed to the New River. She's a wonderful teacher! Once we were in the river she taught me how to "read the river" as well as how to look for what the fish might be eating so I could use the correct fly. We spent about an hour in different pools and her patience really calmed me and allowed me to really work on my casting technique. I did get a bite but didn't get the hook set quick enough. Even though I didn't catch anything it was an awesome learning experience that may lead me to buying equipment and trying it at home. Afterwards I took a 2 hour kayak trip on the same beautiful New River, flat water and some small rapids. A really great way to spend a day. Try out RiverGirl, you'll be glad you did! - Tracy J1 contributionWe had such a great experience with Rivergirl and the South Fork of the New River! Kelly was very friendly and helpful and a great tour guide full of interesting information about the history of the town as well as the scientific aspects of the river/fishing. We also had the treat of seeing a bald eagle on the river as well as a few blue herons. I recommend stopping by the little bakery in town as you walk back to your car after the float.
