Ischia Island is full of volcanic phenomena; but this hilly area that shows the geological past of the island, inside the boundaries of Casamicciola municipality, is particularly easy to get to, either walking (about an hour's walk from the city center), and by the minibus no. 16, which starts from "Piazza Marina" (town center) and runs about every hour (to get off at the "Fondo d'Oglio" crater, ask the driver).
The forest called "Bosco della Maddalena" wraps around the slopes of the crater of a today inactive volcano, but it's assumed that it erupted just a little more than 2000 years ago (then almost nothing, compared to the length of history of the Earth).
Coming down from the bus or arriving on foot, you have to take a short paved branch on your left, to reach the mouth of the ancient volcano. The crater (the name of which is precisely "Fondo d'Oglio", ie probably "jar's bottom") isn't deep (only few tens of meters), so get down to the bottom it's quite easy .
The past centuries have allowed the formation into and around the crater of a dense Mediterranean forest, favored by fertile volcanic soil. To become more aware of the place's nature, you should also walk the trail that follows the crater's circumference, just below the rim, in contact with the old, steep crater walls.
Another source of interest is the presence of "fumaroles", ie small mouths in the ground from which hot air blows: a witness of geothermal activity still going on. Their location is shown in a map of the area, available at the entrance to the crater; they are recognizable because the hot air was used to cook food, then there are charred remains around them.
If you want, you can hike further on the forest's trails, up to the summit of Mount "Rotaro" (also of volcanic origin), where you can enjoy a gorgeous view over the northern part of the island.

Well worth a visit, set aside a day for this little gem sat behind the beach. Start at the top and work your way down definitely worth a visit but you need to be able bodied as the thermal spa is set in to the hill side so there are a lot of stairs. When you have had enough you can go in the pool or on to the beach there is also a restaurant and bar for lunch to.
