We had a wonderful evening watching the sunset with the telescopes in the background and then watching the stars. We were fortunate to have a fantastic sunset and clear sky for viewing. The ride is long up and down Mauna Kea is long, but Adam, our guide, kept us entertained with facts about the island, the environment and the stars all evening long. This was something I have always wanted to do and was so thrilled to have such a delightful experience.

We were looking for a last minute Mauna Kea tour out of Hilo, and Arnott’s was a great choice!

We didn’t go during an ideal time for stargazing (almost a full moon, weather wasn’t fantastic and there was a little volcanic fog), but Andras was a fantastic tour guide and made the most of it; he was extremely knowledgeable. Since there weren’t many visible stars (though he did have a telescope and a laser pointer for the ones we did see), there was a lot of focus on the Mauna Loa eruption; we got to see magical views of the lava as well as the sunset and moon rising.

Note that you do have to bring your own warm clothing/snacks! Several people on our tour weren’t prepared for sub-freezing weather.

Take this tour: real HOT steaming fissures, the smell of sulphur, real recent lava flows, real accounts from live actual residents about the 2018 volcano eruption and their personal photos! This is THE tour to feel the true power and devastation of a volcano and how it impacts peoples’ lives!

We had no idea this tour existed until, by chance, New Way Horizon Travel offered a free shuttle to the Hilo Farmer’s Market from the cruise ship port to the farmers’ market and I asked about the 2018 eruption event - we are sooo glad we did! This is no doubt the real volcano experience people want but never knew still exists.

A few other big kudos: 1. Price-wise the tour is on par with other half day excursions BUT a significant portion of the $ goes towards the residences devastated by the eruption to help rebuild and recover. 2. Our tour guide, Brent, was in a word AWESOME - he was the same person who shuttled us from the ship, simply informed without the hard sell, even went out of his way and provided a lift to and from a local restaurant back to the ship after the tour (since the tour spanned lunchtime) - first class all the way!

I’m sort of annoyed that our cruise company had NO information on this tour nor had anything close to equivalent. This NEEDS to be on anyone’s itinerary who wants to experience true, live volcanic activity and not just some dry narrative and grainy pictures about stuff that happened decades ago.

Obviously this type of tour is hard to scale so, should this review result in a massive amount of interest, my apologies but, given the important stories that need to be told, that’s a good problem to have :).

We did the Full Circle Big Island Tour with my family of 2 adults and 2 young kids (5 and 4). Everyone loved it! This was a perfect way to see the island in one amazing day!

From the start, Shawn was very communicative about the general itinerary, while allowing us to customize both before and during the trip. He sent us menus for potential restaurants for both lunch and dinner, and checked in the day before the tour began.

We had two young kids with us - they're curious and generally attentive but a day on a tour bus would be taxing for any kid (and many grown-ups!). The private tour was perfect for us. Shawn plied us with snacks and drinks throughout the day, and we had ample opportunities to stop, whether to rest, stretch our legs, use the facilities, or just to take an unscheduled gaze at the many spectacles the island provides!

We spent a little less time at the Coffee plantation (which was very cool! We're just not big coffee people - 20-30 minutes was plenty there), but took our time at various other places. We stopped at a black sand beach where we saw tons of turtles (!), had amazing pastries at the Punalu'u Bake Shop, grabbed lunch in Volcano and ate by Kilauea (which we got to see erupting!). We got to do a hike through lava tubes, then a few more stops before going to Akaka Falls for another hike to a waterfall! Kids loved this! We also stopped at the Waipi'o Valley Outlook before heading to dinner in Waimea. It was lovely learning about the island and Hawaiian history, but also having an extremely friendly and thoughtful guide made the day easy and fun. Dinner with Shawn was a nice ending to the day, the kids (and adults) had such a blast through and through. Mahalo Shawn, we look forward to seeing you next time we're on the Big Island!

Ultra comfortable ride to the eastern side of the island. Shawn was extremely knowledgeable and informative on the geography and history or the island. This tour took us to places we might not have found on our own. We visited waterfalls and gardens as Shawn provided great commentary on local legends and traditions. We even stopped at a local food stand for awesome Ahi wraps.
Highly highly recommend Big Island Backroad Adventures!

The Volcano Ohana Fat E-bike tour is a must-do! Seeing lava flow is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for most people, and this is how to do it. Spending time with friendly, knowledgeable guides like Byron, family, and friends exploring the park is an amazing way to be in nature, feel the crisp air, take in the lush forests, hike a lava tube, and view the glowing lava.
The bikes are top-of-the-line and easy to ride! The guides are very helpful in explaining how to ride the bike and take safety seriously. Snacks, water, helmets, safety glasses, and bike packs are all graciously provided. We were given opportunities along the way to use restrooms, take pictures, and learn information about the land.
