I wanted to offer our specific feedback regarding PATH's SmartLink cards, as out-of-towners who visit NYC once in a great while.
- SmartLink cards are much more expensive than the MetroCard cards used for NYC transit.
- MetroCard works on PATH trains.
- SmartLink does NOT work on NYC transit (MTA buses, NYC subway).
- PATH has a very limited number of stops in NYC.
As a visitor, you will likely use PATH twice a day, likely to land either at the WTC or at 33rd & Broadway, then, likely, you will walk hours because Manhattan is an awesomely walkable place, and, likely, you will wish you could take a bus back to that PATH station that is hours away.

Very crowded and much-used, so I guess it is much-needed. The stations are big and clean, but not well-decorated. - DREW RGlasgow, UK313 contributionsThe bus terminal itself is quite well laid out and organised in terms of boarding and alighting but the reason i'v e given it a 3 is the staff. Do not expect any of the ticket office staff to be helpful in anyway shape or form. I was heading to Asbury Park for the day and thought it would be easier to try and buy a ticket from the ticket office. I asked for a return to Asbury Park to be told 'we don't go there' next question i asked was 'well what about to Freehold then where I have to change'. Response was ' try gray line or trailways we don't go there' Not to be undone, I googled the journey again, found the bus number, went to ticket machine and bough a return from NYC to Freehold on a NJ transit bus where, according to the bone idle ticket vendor they don't go to, got off at Freehold, bought a return ticket to Asbury Park on an NJ transit bus where t6hey don't go to.
Moral of the story is, plan your journey before you go, you need the bus number to be able to buy a ticket from the machines. Just before you exit the airport for the taxi line-up, a sleazy looking middle eastern guy asked me if I needed a taxi. I was in a hurry, so I said 'yes' and followed his direction to a large SUV at the curb. No markings. A female taxi driver put my bag in the back and then AFTER I was in the taxi informed me the ride to the New Yorker Hotel would be $85 plus tolls. The total bill came to $108.25. I must say, she got me there on time considering the traffic, but it was a Sunday afternoon, and I could have made it there at half the price (or for $2.75 if you take the Q70 bus to the Subway). For the return trip to the airport, I got the E subway from the hotel and connected to the (FREE) Q70 bus back to Terminal B. Cost $.00.
