As a student of history (and the U.S. Civil War), I came to Vicksburg specifically to visit this National Military Park. It was vast - far bigger than I had imagined - with much of the original battlefield lying outside the park boundaries. The park is designed to be viewed by car, although a major section of its roadway (including U.S. Grant's HQ) is off-limits due to collapsed roads. (The roads have been closed since 2019 - I guess money for repairs in pretty tight.) The highlight of my visit - which I did not expect and would rate as a must-see - was the U.S.S. Cairo Museum, which lies within the Park. This iron-clad river warship was sunk in 1862, and then discovered and raised from the deep mud in 1964 - with all its contents intact. This site was very well-designed, and I highly recommend it - along with the rest of the Park.

Did the ghost tour as a side trip while visiting the battlefield in Vicksburg. Melanie was awesome and made everyone feel like her friend. If you are a ghost skeptic this place will change your mind. Definitely recommend this.

We went to Vicksburg to tour the National Battlefield Park and while driving through town saw this museum. Very interesting museum with lots of information on the Mississippi River, the peoples, shipping, floods etc. They also have a very large Mississippi River Tug on display there you can tour. It is open from the wheelhouse, cabins, galley, dining room all the way down and into the massive engine room. As I am Captain on the Great Lakes it was interesting for me to see a vessel built for navigating and working on the Rivers. There are lots of interactive displays in the museum if you have kids along. Very historic downtown there worth touring as well.

We went to a Christmas event today to the Old Courthouse Museum and greatly enjoyed the museum itself. While a history museum of this sort doesn't always appeal to children, this one does. Kids were doing a scavenger hunt and having a great time. There was something for everyone- civil war artifacts, pottery, antique vet tools, old fashioned toys and clothes, weapons, musical instruments, lots of stories and so much more. We were there an hour or so.

The new owners are a young couple who are working hard to make your stay as pleasant as possible. Beautiful home with a stunning pool area and a terrific breakfast. Great place to stay if visiting the battlefield.

The murals were excellent unfortunately a bit weathered. What tied it to history were the little plaques in front of each. They explained what was going on at the time and brought them to life. Tip also walk through the gate in the center and on the water side to the right shows the different flood levels over the years.

Great model railroad layouts with running trains and shops. Huge Dioramas with battlefield included. We were told later that there is a camel in there although we did not,see it…of course we weren’t looking for one'. There’s a 25 minute film that we had her start for us but it’s only on a TV screen up on the wall by the battlefield diorama so it’s not large at all as the movie only shows up at the bottom of the film. We were told it was about life in the time of the Civil War but it seemed more clinical than that. Great lady working there when we visited. Close in parking.

We were in the middle of a long road trip when we had change our plans as I always wanted to visit Vicksburg to look over the area that I have often read about due to the battle there. We stopped by the museum, not planned, and late in the day. As we walked thru the place and talked with the owner we received amazing detail on munitions, were able to look at the collection, and many of the different displays. What we also heard was a different point of view on how, why and how, still different the perspectives on how and why the Civil war fought and won. Our last minute planning came back to haunt us to find a historic BnB and we ended up in basic hotel. One phone from family and out trip was cut short so we headed home.

Nice variety of works of art and I thought the prices were reasonable too. It's over the 61 Coffee Shop on Washingon St. I got an orange juice before going up. I think you would enjoy stopping in!

For a Civil War historian, following the Vicksburg Campaign Trail in Mississippi is similar to following Lee's Retreat from Petersburg to Appomattox in Virginia. In 1863, General Ulysses S. Grant spent months trying to find a way to seize Vicksburg and sever the Confederates' control of the Mississippi River. Attempts to bypass Confederate defenses at Grand Gulf and the Yazoo River, to the north of Vicksburg, failed miserably. He even tried to build a canal to open a better navigational route to the city. The canal flooded. Finally, Grant decided to march his army south along the west side of the Mississippi River, cross at Bruinsburg, west of Port Gibson, then proceed to Jackson, the state capitol, and approach Vicksburg from the east. So the Vicksburg Campaign Trail takes travelers from Port Gibson to Jackson to Raymond to Champion Hill to the Big Black River and finally to Vicksburg, where you can take a 16-mile tour of Vicksburg Military Park. The trail is well documented through thousands of historical monuments and markers. One of the most interesting stops in the park is at Shirley House, the only surviving wartime structure. Of all the monuments to the soldiers who participated in the 47-day siege, the Illinois monument is most impressive.
