Just got off today. As a cruise pro but a NCL rookie wasn't sure what to expect. The answer was "meh-average" The good - Overall cost. Saved a ton of money over competition and was able to get drink package and gratuities included. The bad - The idea of freestyle dining was intriguing. But because of the freedom you have you end up having to go to the buffet every meal because the restaurants are booked. The stiffness of scheduled meals at least means you have a reserved seat. May I suggest rather then an open freestyle, you have a rotation of restaurants with time blocked reservations. The ugly - The NOISE! Because the ship is so small they have to make due. But this places very loud events in the general areas. The singers in the atrium, and at the bars had audio levels fit for stadiums not small rooms. Even the hibachi restaurant was loud. And don't get me started on the show "Burn the floor" let's just say they could have turned the volume down 1000 % and still been too loud. The last thing I would say, that would keep me from sailing NCL again is the lack of friendless from the staff. This is a direct result of NCL. Because most people have prepaid gratuities and nobody was tipping individual service like bar or servers the staff was not excited to see you (with a few exceptions) Having no set servers because of freestyle made it difficult to build rapport with the staff. While the competitions staff seemed disingenuous for tips, it was at least attempted friendliness. Overall 3/5 stars because I did enjoy a lot of the time spent. Every ship and cruise line has issues. A few adjustments from the audio engineers and some better planning from NCL would have made it a great vacation.

Here’s what you can expect on a 4-day Norwegian Breakaway cruise! Every bar had 2 bartenders and a line of AT LEAST 30 passengers. You’ll wait in line for 35 minutes to get the Internet package to work. If you go to the Spa for the Massage Taster, you’ll wait for 10 minutes—The massage therapists were “downstairs”. There will be no apology. If they cancel your shore excursion, your shore excursion credit $50 disappears into thin air. If you don’t go to the buffet as soon as it opens you’ll spend your time bouncing into passengers who are trying to get their meal. Expect to wait for 1 hour for the tender to take you ashore to Great Stirrup Cay. Not enough tenders, too many passengers! It was my worst cruise in 40 years of cruising! That’s what you can expect when there are 5000 passengers and 1500 crew members on a ship, and the CEO makes $10 million per year.

Granny Travels Solo wrote a review May 2024

Granny Travels Solo cruised on the NCL Breakaway Feb 2023 to Mexico, Honduras, and Belize. NCL canceled the Belize port for questionable reasons, which was extremely disappointing. The Ocean View (OV) cabin was acceptable for the price paid, although the window was always fogged due to broken window seal. Otherwise, cabin was nice, and bathroom was much larger than expected. The ship overall was clean and had many diversion options (casino, shopping, lounges/bars, entertainment, etc). The pool is small, so don't expect to do more than wade around. If you try to escape the crowds in the library, it has fairly restricted hours. There are places outside some of the restaurants that are quiet and have comfy lounge chairs. The onboard internet is lousy. For solo cruisers, NCL did assign a cruise director just to assist solo cruisers exclusively, and this is a great perk for people hesitant to cruise solo. The Solo CD coordinated group dinners and activities, as well as group seating for the theater shows. However, NCL should include some learning and enrichment options to balance out their low-end partier cruise experience that centers around booze, casino, and cheap theme parties. Some cruisers do have a mind and like to learn, rather than revert back to high school behaviors. Onboard enrichment will be more important if port cancellations continue. Overall, the ship was clean, and staff was professional and friendly. The food in the specialty restaurants wasn't much better than the buffet at the time. The food was decent for a mid-priced cruise of this type. The NCL Breakaway is a floating budget/mid-range hotel with casino and theater. Apparently the Breakaway will be in dry dock in March of 2025 for upgrades. Would recommend cruising on this ship, provided you do much research before booking, and keep expectations realistic for what you pay. However, do not book any cruise solely for one particular port, because as I experienced, many cruise maps are showing canceled ports in increasing numbers. Buyer beware!

8 floor forward cabin, very noisy throughout our 4 day cruise. Nassau ok, walking around the small city unless you book an excursion. Great Stirup Cay is a beach-with beach activities-good for snorkeling, paddle boarding, zip lining. Not impressed with instructions from staff. Unclear packages. Thermal Spa was worth the money to me- the clean, calm atmosphere not loud partying was a nice treat! Staff average, accommodations and restaurants ok. We would not cruise again with them -just not our preference. Previous cruised with Carnival-honestly thought it was better. Will continue to seek another cruise line.

Bait and Switch, I should have read all the reviews before booking with Norwegian. We booked a Caribbean cruise to go to BVI, US Virgin, St.Thomas, Dominican and Bahamas. 3 weeks before sailing we all get an email stating we are no longer going to the BVI with no explanation. When I called they told me it was because of gas prices and an issue with BVI not allowing to be docked at certain times. So they decided to give every cabin a $100 credit, this is BS, they should give back at least $500. I only booked this cruise because of BVI and US Virgin isl. I really do not care about Bahamas and Dominican. They had the nerve to say they will give us more time in the boring Bahamas to make up for British Virgin Island, Tortola. On top of this they never mentioned they removed the amount of time we are spending in US Virgin Islands from 8 hours to 6.5 hours. Total rip off , first time with Norwegian and last time.
