We went down through the Panama Canal for a 16 day cruise on Holland American ship called the Rotterdam. The staff was fantastic. Our bathroom framework of the door was all rusty. The windows in the dining room which was beautiful had cracked windows and we are filthy on the outside, you could not see out of them. Sliding doors on our room you could not see out of the bottom because they had lost the vacuum between the glass. They told us the ship was to go in for refurbishing in December of this year. It should've went in last year.

We chose this ship solely for the itinerary and quickly realized once onboard that the time of year leant itself to a monoculture of snowbirds, many with mobility issues. The food is average and on the heavy side. The snowbirds seemed to complain that the Lido deck food service closes too early in the evening and opens too late in the morning- if those are your triggers avoid this ship. The staff were very nice- restaurant, bars, stewards- the front desk OK. It took three days to address a noise issue in one of our group's cabins- turned out to be a crack in the wall behind the headboard that went on all night when the ship increased speed. HAL seems to cater to the snowbirds and their parents who are trying to get out the winter months at home. There is a huge contingent of folks who don't get off the boat and are simply cruising to cruise. When they do get off the boat, I noticed a lot of complaining and sarcasm about the people and places we visited. Having cruised other lines, I miss the diversity of age groups. Be aware that there are many mobility augmentation tools aboard- walkers, canes, and scooters with some of the scooter drivers being very unsafe in their speed.

It was horrible from the start and got worse from there. We were supposed to be in a suite and it was for 3 people and a wheelchair we couldn’t even fit the wheelchair inside it was on a normal ship a balcony. We had no perks of a suite? The air never worked and it was pretty much in the 90’s with 90% humidity the 15 days. Even though we told them we had a wheelchair that ship is not equipped for a handicapped person. The food was mediocre the service was the worst I have ever had. It was my 6th cruise and May parents 20th we had also been on the oosterdam and it was a good ship and cruise. We called about air we were told they would check on it over and over. They have absolutely no entertainment on the ship. We asked to speak to management we never spoke to anyone but customer service. I wrote in after cruise and was told sorry you had a bad time and don’t want to ever go on holland America again but here is $200 shipboard credit?

Going through the Panama Canal is awesome. You need to go to the talks about the history of the canal to fully appreciate what you are seeing. The Rotterdam is the perfect size ship with about 1400. It is an older ship but very well kept. The service was excellent from embarkation to debarkation.Food service and quality was excellent. the only fault I found was that there were too many sea days.

This is a very nice ship! The crew was exceptional! Compared to other lines we've sailed the buffet is fantastic! No roundabouts with self serve of cold food (Royal Caribbean this is for you). Friendly staff serving warm/hot fresh food, no cold bacon or entrees. The cabin was what you'd expect from any line, not spacious, but you don't sail to stay in the cabin. Biggest drawback is the nightly entertainment. With this being a smaller ship, around 1400 passengers, I guess they can't afford a higher level of entertainers. But the rest of the cruise made up for it. Another drawback was a couple of the ports required a 30 - 90 minute bus ride to the nearest town and the port stops were industrial.
