Cruise was compensation for a previous trip which had an engine failure and could not be completed. Change was to a much larger ship with upgrade to balcony. No complaints about how Princess handled the substitute or the other items that became complimentary. Majority of passengers were Canadian with a refreshing group of Aussies. We normally ate in the buffet for breakfast but were disappointed by how the meals were offered lukewarm at best and often cold. When I complained about the weak coffee I was told I could go downstairs to buy stronger coffee, but it would cost extra. The meals in the main dining room were good but I wondered how a filet magnon could be marinated long enough to destroy the texture of what is normally an excellent steak. The complimentary drink package was generous enough but neither my wife or I came close to enjoying all the benefits. Three days into the trip, many of the bars ran out of clamato juice and could not offer that Canadian favourite, the"Caesar". Huge confusion over the ArriveCAN app which had to be completed again after many passengers had already completed their information. Still unsure why this private information had to be shared with Princess so it could be forwarded to Canada Customs and Immigration. As a visually impaired person who does not own a mobile device, I was disappointed that so much information was only available on the room TV or on the Princess Medallion mobile app. Never did find out when there were specialty nights in the main dining room. Or why we were assigned a specialty restaurant instead of being allowed to choose our own. Drove my wife crazy having to read everything aloud to me in the buffet. Even the preregistration done at home could only be completed successfully on a mobile device despite comments from Princess that a browser version, with a link to it, offered the same selection information. It did not. Overall the trip was enjoyable, mainly because we were sharing it with some close friends. But we found our trips with other cruise lines more satisfactory.

We start our cruise in two days. The need to use the Medallion has been a nightmare. And then the Covid test, Can Arrive and Wellness check have all created stress. Preparing for this cruise with the requirements of Royal Princess has not been enjoyable. I’m not even excited or much looking forward to the vacation. I doubt I will choose Royal Princess again. I understand and appreciate the need for Covid and wellness checks. But the Medallion!! In other reviews I read it’s a pain on board as well. Not happy.

The cruise was average at best, cancelled ports, crap internet. But two things saved it. Extraordinary musician, performer Darren Dowler. And our cruise director Natalie was above exceptional. Sit down restaurants were good, buffet average. Cabins good. Steward great!!! Had a cancelled port so that sucked. Pros - Entertainer Darren Dowler, Cruise staff Cons - broken things, cancelled port, average buffet and not much to do in Haines. The crew was very nice. It was also nice to see a female cruise director. Too many are now gay men who are sooooooo overly feminine they make the ladies seem masculine.

I chose Royal Princess because I had heard it’s a good cruise ship…. ABSOLUTELY NOT!! Let’s start with arriving at terminal waiting to embark the ship. We arrived at 12:00 noon - our scheduled time…and WAITED A FREAKING 3 HOURS !! NO KIDDING… 3 HOURS - computers down and no communication with ship. Room are SO SMALL even with a balcony…. We had to walk sideways between the beds and wall to get to the very small toilet and shower. Had to print my account every single day only to find out that they charged me drinks I ordered and yet, I had bought the beverage package (sodas, mocktails)…. Had to wait in line to the Guests Services EVERY DAY TO HAVE THE CHARGE(S) REMOVED… When reserving at specialty restaurant they would double charge me - had to wait in line to the Guests Services to HAVE THE EXTRA CHARGE REMOVED AND PUT ON MY ROOMATE ACCOUNT AS REQUESTED AT THE RESTAURANTS… I had booked excursions (4) and three of them were cancelled for diverse reasons and yet, once on the boat, they were back (2 of them) but with a 50% price increase compared to what I had paid online a month before the cruise. INTERNET….. WORST KIND…. Does NOT work - $194.00 for having everyday a message on tv screen - Satellite not working or temporary out of service. I passed 20 to half hour every single day of the cruise at the Guests Services (several people in line) to have the extra charges removed. Entertainment: Nathalie is wonderful. Magicians interesting, show ENCORE pretty good, Match games hilarious, karaoke was fun. Comedian: the first one on the first week was hilarious non-stopping… The 2nd week the (supposedly) Comedian was absolutely AWFUL… GROWLING HALF THE TIME, pointing out after 15 minutes that someone finally clap and that he was waiting for the rest of us to do so…. His jokes were stupid not funny at all and I saw several couples leaving the Vista Lounge and the Princess theater or falling asleep ! I don’t know who auditioned them, but they miss the target on that one. FOOD: buffet on 16 th floor is so-so - food is cold (sausages, eggs, bacon), only half of the buffet is filled. Concerto and Allegro dining rooms where you go most everyday for free dinner (some lunches or breakfast) Lobster tails were atrocious (brown color) one tasted so bad , my roomate spit it out…. Prime rib was delicious though. Pizza at Alfredo - they don’t use real cheese but ‘powder cheese’ on top which makes it yukky… We had chosen August 6 to 20th for the weather. While the Cruiseship cannot control the weather, that too was a great disappointment! 5 days of ‘daylight’ with 2 sunny days….second week we were surrounded by fog…and I mean FOG.. Specialty restaurant “Crown Grill” was a hit. $29 for a fabulous dinner every time. Unfortunately Royal Princess has only 2 specialty restaurant (the other one is an Italian and is just ok $25) SPA: while the massages are great it is way too expensive !!! $200 to $300 per session + 18% gratuity and when they present you the check, they have a line for EXTRA TIP !! So let see…. $300 plus 18% tip …..$54!!! $200 plus 18%…$36. Plus taxes and they look if you are going to put something on “EXTRA TIP”… making you feel uncomfortable if you do not.. STEWARDS: EXCELLENT SERVICE (We had Abdul) And the servers in any of the restaurants are GREAT! Pools and whirlpools….. ONLY OUTDOOR !! So when you cruise in Alaska, forget about it. We had only 2 days that were warm enough to use it. On all the other cruise ships I have been, they have outdoor and indoor pools and whirlpools. I was extremely disappointed with Royal Princess and will never ever book any cruises with any of the 15 ships of the Princess cruise line. NEVER EVER ! I have been to a dozen of cruises and Norwegian Prima Class, Royal Caribbean The Allure of the Sea, Carnaval The Dream, Celebrity Cruise, Oceania to name a few are TOP NOTCH !!

Some of the "Medallion" services, such as dinner reservation, often were "off-line, please check back later." Couldn't make or change a dinner reservation until the app came back on line. The "Medallion" they want you to wear around your neck looks like a 6th-grade P-E medal. They want you to use their app for everything. Right now I'm attempting to submit my Covid vaccination record for an upcoming cruise, and the app says the Covid test I submitted is "under review. "This app can't even read the QR code I sent to them!! We got an email message "final payment due" {on another cruise starting in about two weeks] but there's no "click here to make a payment." The other cruise lines, and all the airlines and hotels, have an easy method to make payments, why not Princess? Food was good, and the cabin attendant excellent, but the overall experience was very low, due to the bug-plagued tech system they are saddled with. I've taken a couple dozen cruises, including 4 to Alaska, and this was one of the least enjoyable, due to the frustrations with Princess' tech disaster.
