Which church is better for attending the high mass? Church of the Jesuits or
St. Stephen’s Cathedral?
I can not properly answer your question. I am neither religious or Catholic. My love of these churches has everything to do with their architectural and artistic beauty and nothing with religion. I can say, however, that St. Stephens is often overwhelmed with tourists, even during religious ceremonies. The Church of the Jesuits is much smaller, more intimate, and has alot less tourists. Plus, I think it is prettier. For those reasons I would gues the smaller church is better if you wish to go for a more serious and sacred experience. Good luck!
When we went to Mass at the Jesuit church it was a Haydn Mass with choir and instruments. I understand local people go a half hour early to sit up front. It appeared to have many local residents in addition to tourists. The interior was beautiful and was certainly not small. We did not go to St. Stephan's,for a service, but the Jesuit church was spectacular.
I agree totally with ilangelo's answer: go to the Jesuitenkirche. The mass will be accompanied by wonderful preaching if you understand German, and the music will be an incredibly performed Haydn, Mozart, or Schubert mass. The exuberant Baroque interior is unique and contrasts with the modest exterior of the church. Get there at least a half hour ahead of time!
Well, you're more likely to get more pomp in Stephansdom. It's the main church of Vienna and the one where the Cardinal is most likely to officiate. In terms of which is better? I believe, God is equally present at both places, and I prefer the singing and organ playing in the Jesuitenkirche. It's much more beautiful, much less touristy and, for me, a much more enriching experience.
If you like the Vienna Choir Boys, though, go to Mass at the chapel in the Hofburg. It's minuscule, so you might have to make a reservation (in the summer, it's a sauna) but thesinging is exquisite, and a Schubert Mass I heard there is - far and away - the most beautiful Mass I've ever attended. Hope that helps.
Sorry I cannot be of any help as we did not attend mass. The Church of the Jesuits is smaller and therefore more intimate.
I would attend the Church of Jesuits. I prefer the layout and size of the Church. St. Stephens is most talked about, but it is very big and impersonal with a steady stream of tourists. I think the quietness of the smaller church would make it much easier to allow yourself to be immersed in beauty and spirit of the Mass. Take the St Stephens tour, but experience Mass in the sanctity that it deserves.
my preference is the Jesuits' Church for High Mass. Last time we had the Schubert German Mass, and it was a miracle performance.
We went to Stephansdom to hear mass while in Vienna. There were lots of people, so if you want to hear a mass in a more intimate place the Church of the Jesuits is better.
