Is it important to book in advance? Visiting in September. Just trying to keep some flexibility in the schedule.

I tend to be very careful , and because this excursion is so important , I would book in advance .

Most importantly , I have traveled the world , and the Louvre has nothing on what I saw at the Great Barrier Reef . I stayed in those waters until my lips turned blue ! I was dragged out, and covered in blankets . Beyond beautiful !

You can book ahead but we bought ticket at the station about 10 minutes before travel. We went in low season though.

~Hi and in answer to your question yes book ahead but they can be changed by calling them on the phone to another suitable time, however, yes they can be purchased at the station in Cairns and the first stop great stop this as it has a really nice shop for one to purchase gifts etc and perhaps a coffee if you get there early, one would have to make sure its early though if you wish to get coffee as it's busy time for the train

A great way to book is thru an app ( get your guide) we did the Great Barrier Reef and Kuranda Rail over a two day period and saved nearly $200 Au. I'm sure you can pay on the day also.Hope this is helpful.

When we went, in March, we only booked the day before and there were plenty of places. It may depend on the season, but I wouldn't think September is too busy.

My apologies, but I do not know, though I would guess that that early in the season one would be all right. I was there in February and had not booked, but I hit a problem because the weather had put the railway line out of action. I did not need to book to catch the bus either way, which was in fact the route I took. I did not need to book for anything else that day, for instance the cable car or the river boat trip.
