The Strand Questions & Answers

Glasgow, United Kingdom

It was stated in a recent review that the Strand hotel is about to be renovated.

Can any one tell me when and what they are going to do.

That will help me decide whether to make a booking for next February.

Many thanks.

The hotel’s current owners will close The Strand on 1 May 2016 to undertake a major refurbishment. The project will see the property retain its classic colonial style, with marble and teak flooring, ceiling fans, chandeliers, wooden furniture and decorative Burmese antiques, while adding a new “contemporary twist”. The hotel is expected to reopen in November 2016. As this hotel was and certainly will be one of the icons of South East Asian hospitality early booking should be envisaged.

Yes the renovation will be finished by November 2016, so February should be great for you to stay in the brand new, but still with the stylish look refurbished hotel. I believe they are also adding a swimming pool. Have a great stay when you go, lucky you.

I don't know anything about the renovation. We were there in November, 2015. I agree with the traveler above that this hotel is "elegantly aged." Unlike this traveler, however, I am not so sure that we would be quick to return. The systems, and esp the air conditioning, do not work well. And it is HOT there year round. We were not 100% comfortable at the Strand. On the other hand, even when paying 5-star Western prices, *nothing* works well in Myanmar -- it is part of the adventure!

I don't know how recent that news is. Three months ago it had not been freshly updated but was comfortably and elegantly aged. I would quickly return.
