I plan to stay in Cusco for about 6 days to visit Machu Picchu (1 day trip) and Rainbow Mountain (1 day trip). According to the hotel location, will it make sense to stay at this hotel when accounting travel time to get to each of the mountains for the day?
I've heard it is best to spend the night in Aguas Calientes the night before Machu Picchu - will likely do that. As far as the rest of the trip, wondering if this hotel location makes sense for the other nights.
Also, is a 6 day stay including both mountains too many days in Cusco?
If you get up early you don't have to worry about staying in Aguascalientes, so you can do the round trip on a single day. Still the place is nice and I bet you'll find stuff to do.
It is really good to stay at Agua Calientes the night before Manchu Picchu...and to have your ticket for that and the ruins ahead of time. You must present your passport as well. The buses going up to the ruins seem to run full, so if you don't have your ducks in a row, you might not get in. If you have the money, there is one hotel at the top by the ruins. The restaurant at the top is a buffet, and it is good. I can't answer the other questions that you have, but you can see a good number of things from Cuzco. There are other places in the Sacred Valley, too, just depending on what you want to see. If you have altitude problems, it is not a bad idea to fly into Cuzco and go immediately to the Sacred Valley for a few days to adjust because it is lower. That seemed to work well for all our folks on our trip. I think there is quite a bit to see in both areas. Hope you have a good time.
We did not go to Rainbow Mountain. We came to this hotel after our overnight stay at Machu Picchu Pueblo. I would agree that 3 days max for Cuzco itself. 2 days would probably do. Do keep in mind that Cuzco is at 11K feet - I struggled with the elevation. I was fine at Machu Picchu (9K feet).
Cusco is beautiful and full of wonderful sights. The Hotel Palacio del Inka is just across the road from an ancient temple and one of the best museums. You'll love the food, the people and the llamas are great. We left our bags at the hotel and took the train to Machu Picchu and spent two nights at The Sanctuary Lodge...the only hotel right outside the ruins and we loved it and came and went to the site every day. We were surprised that the ruins were quite deserted by 3pm as most people head back to the train by then. If you're staying at a hotel in Aguas Calientes the buses are very regular and yes, the queues for the ruins start very early, but once the return trains start you'll have the ruins almost to yourself. We didn't go to Rainbow Mountain, but an amazing site, a taxi drive there and a lovely walk downhill coming back, is Saksaywaman. It's a huge temple complex with great views from 'on high' back towards Cusco. You'll have a wonderful time!
6 days is not too much. We stayed 9 days including 3 night Salkantay trail.
Yes it does. This hotel is exquisite. It's in the city center and you can go anywhere from there. It's smart to stay at Aguascalientes before machu pichu as the line for minibuses start at 5am. Good luck. Watch out for llamas. They spit.
We did not go to Rainbow Mountain. - It´s best to stay closer to Machu Picchu the night before heading up there. Sacred Valley has many good options and seemed nice than Agua Calientes to us. 6 days in Cusco is too long unless you want to immerse yourself in details. 2-3 days max. would be my suggestion.
