$3.60 one way to the Powell station which is right near the cable cars. Best to buy round trip BART tix because you can only use the same cc 2x in 48 hours for security reasons. You can research online but I still had to ask once I got there, and everyone is really helpful navigating around. Driving and parking is very difficult/expensive in the city, and public transit is great. If you buy a CityPass it gives you unlimited access to BART and MUNI transport (buses) plus a lot of nice attractions (for which you can bypass the lines).
