Best time of the day to go? We would be going ende of April - are they seen year round?
It is best to call ahead. If there are fish migrating through the area the sea lions may be out of the caves for long periods of time.
I would advise you to check the webcam online to see if the sea lions are even there most of the time I've been there in April I was just fine and that my wife and I just came back from the sea lion caves and there are tons of them
Year round attraction but seals are only in the cave during the winter months !
We were there at the end of May and there were many sea lions. Suggest you call in advance or check web cam. Apparently it's better to go in the afternoon although we were there before noon and they were in the cave waiting for us.
We were just there and they are out at sea now - but it's very interesting to see the cave even empty - we are told they come back - late fall - winter till early spring -
We are south of there about 40 miles in North Bend, Oregon - if you go out to Cape Arago Park - there are hundreds along the beach and on the rocks - amazing site and sound to hear them bark ! Hope that info helps !
Winter months are best to see them in the cave. In spring, they will move out to the rocks in front of the cave for mating and birthing. They will mostly stay out of the caves during the summer. I went in August, and there were 75-100 on the rocks at the overlook.
We went there towards the end of June and there were seals in the cave. We were there around 4pm.
I would suggest checking the tide. I believe it to be best a few hours prior to "High" tide, giving you a couple hours after same. Thus a window of about 5 hours. But yes there are some there most of the time. But the Masses are really something to see.
I believe it’s a year round attraction, but you may want to check their website. We went early afternoon during the week in July and there was a small crowd
Actually you should call, there are times during the year, as when I went a few months ago, there are hardly any sea lions in the cave as I think they were mating or something out on the rocks. I would call the people and ask. They were very knowledgeable about all the questions we asked and when was the best time to view the animals.
There is really no bad time to go... they hang out in the cave year round. Although I imagine a hotter day would ramp up the smell to close to unbearable, but if you when there a good strong wind from the West it’ll carry it mostly out the other side of the cave.
We went in August but the front desk lady said the sea lions are there all year long.
