exploring Capetown & surroundings

We usually visit in February as this is their summer. Temperatures are in the 70/80’s but with a nice breeze. If you want whale watching go in September but the weather is cooler and can be rainy. Flights – We book our flight through Travel Councillors. They have agents all over the country who work from home. Ours is really good and is more like a personal friend. In fact she’s in Kalkan this week and will tell me all about it when she gets back. Web.site Travel Councillors or Tel: 0800 074 7800. There will be a Counsellor in your area and the service is free. They do all the hard work of trawling through flight prices – saving you time and effort. We usually fly with Emirates – they always work out the cheapest with just one short stop in Dubai. B.A. do non stop but you have to fly from London, you can’t book your seats when you pay and their leg room is less than Emirates. Our experience of B.A. is not good and who wants the challenge of Heathrow? In 2014 we will be flying with Turkish Airlines who are £200 PP. Cheaper than Emirates. We have just booked for 2016 with Emirates would not recommend Turkish Airlines for this journey. Car Hire – we book our car through Avis as soon as we know our dates. Make yourself a Preferred Customer online and you usually get an upgrade if they have one available. Their rates are competitive and we have nothing but praise for them. We don’t pick up the car from the airport as we stay in Capetown for the first few days and you don’t need one there. Book it for when you move on. You will be tired after the flight and not up to driving in a busy city even though they do drive on the same side as us. Taxis from the airport into Capetown are reasonable. Accommodation – You can either stay in a hotel or one of the many Guest Houses which are like boutique hotels some expensive, some very reasonable but with more atmosphere than a hotel. They are usually privately owned and the staff are very friendly. Check out the accommodation website for your selected town and then check them out on Tripadvisor or ask me. Places to visit – Capetown – We stay in CT for 2 or 3 days just to wind down from the flight. On a first visit I would stay longer as there is a lot to see and do and what you miss you can do on your way back. We stay near the Waterfront in a small guest house.Very nice, clean and friendly and very helpful. The Waterfront has lots of restaurants and shops and is a working port so quite interesting. Our first port of call on our first morning is The V&A where we have a good coffee watching the seals basking and the boats coming and going. Wonderful. From the Waterfront you can catch the Big Red Bus which tours all the points of interest and you can hop on and off as and when you desire. It goes to the cable car which takes you to the top of Table Mountain and the beaches. There is another route which covers the wine route of Constantia. There is an on board commentary so you can choose where you want to get off. I think they run every 10 minutes from the stopping points, which are many. From Capetown once you have a car you can visit Hout Bay, Simons Town which has a naval base, Kalk Bay which has a good Saturday market and the many other beaches plus the Silvermine nature reserve which has lots of walks. Kirstenbosch Gardens is also a must if you like plants, walking and a peaceful walk, There are many wineries, particulary in the Franschhoek, Paal, Stellenbosch triangle. Some tastings are free but we find that if you pay, just a few rand, you then don't feel obliged to buy any wine if it's not to your taste. Quite a lot of the wineries serve lunch which is usually reasonably priced and good quality.

Very casual but food is good. It is family owned so they have a reputation to maintain. Eat outside, it's slightly under cover and rustic. Good cocktails and the best prawns ever.

Bustleing and busy. It is in the shopping centre at the waterfront. Casual dress. Food is very good and can be had in small portions so you can have several tasters. Food if you want a light meal. Staff very efficient.
