skyecoote's City Tips

  • Lisbon's a great base to explore surrounding areas. Trains to Sintra leave from Rossio St (about 30 min trip). Sintra has cheap hop on- hop off tourist buses for the main routes
  • Many major attractions have roof top access for those who like to get up and look out. Be aware though, that reaching the roof generally involves tight narrow circular staircases
  • The famous Pateis de Belem are the original and the best. There can be long queues but they move quickly. Limited tables inside. Buy at least 2 per visit!
  • Being hilly, it can be strenuous, especially when hot, but the hills offer lots of wonderful panoramic lookouts over the city. Just wear comfortable shoes!
  • The downtown area is gridded and easy to naviagte, but start climbing the hills, the streets are narrow and windy. Enjoy wandering where the will takes you.
  • It has a great public transport system, well signed and colour coded for ease of use. Cheap to use, but metro cards are available if you are going to use public transport a lot
  • The major tourist attractions are quite cheap in Lisbon, but Lisbon cards get you discounted entry. Some monuments have a combined price if visiting more than one
  • Many churches and museums do not allow you to take flash photography or use a tripod. Bulky camera bags can be difficult when inside the numerous small staircases and passageways
  • Travelling between Lisbon and Belem is easy to see Jeronimos, Belem Tower, etc. Local buses and trams make the 10 min frequently
  • To visit Christ the Redeemer statue, catch a local ferry from the main wharf port downtown across the river, then walk or catch a local bus up the hill
  • The medieval town of Evora is accessible by bus from the main bus depot in Lisbon. The buses are clean and comfortable and some offer wifi.
  • There are high speed trains for trips north to Coimbra and Porto. Most of the local Lisbon train stations will intersect with one of the major stations

Local ferries depart from the main wharf downtown and drop you on the opposite side of the river. From there a local bus can take you up the hill, or you can walk. There is an elevator and stairs to access the top viewing platform. For those not good with heights, the views from the bottom are also magnificent back across the river. There is a small cafe on the grounds and a souvenir shop inside the statue

Beautiful modern monument. There is a wind compass and map in the ground, showing Portugal's explorations, but it is not until you are up the top of the monument looking down that you appreciate it. Going up to the roof is a must and the walls are high enough that you don't feel like you are on the edge!

This church never fails to take my breath away. You enter under a small dark roof, walk past the tomb of Vasco de Gama and all of a sudden the roof line soars to the heavens and ornately carved columns are rising majestically in front of you. The roof and everything around is stunningly carved and crafted, there is so much to look at, but it remains a peaceful place. There are cloisters attached that are just lovely as well
