Enjoy the glorious past of Lisbon

Get up for a lovely day in Lisbon. Stroll in Belem (which stands for Biblical Beth Lechem) . See Belem tower that used to stand in the middle of the river Tejo is now standing proudly on the bank. Near the tower you will notice a replica of a small plane that crossed the Atlantic from Portugal to Brazil in 1928. Further east you go to see a very striking monument to the Portuguese discoverers - All the main figures appear there - Kings, Captains, Poets, Clergymen and others. Close to the Monument look at a pavement map of the world from the glorious days of the Portuguese Empire when it was the richest one in Europe. Note where is the center of the world? - Lisbon of course. Cross the garden (underpass) towards Jeronimos Monastery. Get in - adore the church and pay tribute to Vasco de Gama, to Camoise the national poet . See the nice cloister inside. On the left hand sight of the monastery there is the magnificent Maritime museum - another tribute to the great days of the Empire. Now I guess you need a coffee break - go back pass the monastery, cross the next street and you coma to one of the real Lisbon institutions - Pasteis De Belem - a huge coffee shop that makes small delicious cakes (dozen of thousands every day) . Leave Belem and head to the center - Stroll in the main squares of the city - Praca Do Comercio, Rossio and Augusta gate and the pedestrian street that connects these two. Few impressive sculptures and monuments. The large National theater was the head of the inquisition . Walk north in the large avenue of the Liberdades untill you reach the impressive monument of the Marquise De Pombal - The right leader in the right time in the right place - Right after the big earthquake - 1755. Above it Eduardo Park with more symbolic monuments. If you are into art - get into Gulbenkian - A huge art collection. Climbs with tram 28 up to Sao Jorje castle - lovely place with lovely views . After the visit - climbs down towards the Tejo river through Alfama , Then take a walk (or a taxi) to the real must museum - the Museum of tiles - azulejos - You see them all over Portugal, here you get to understand the system. If you are into Ocean creatures - visit the big Oceanarium and see the more modern part of Lisbon. Then take a rest before your evening treat - Barrio Alto and a dinner in one of the nice Fado clubs of the city. Enjoy your stay - Lisbon is lovely - may be you will decide to stay longer. Fado is the typical music of Portugal. Different from other folk music - it is an urban music not coming from villages and countryside as most folk music. The Portuguese guitar is different too.
