If you'e traveling to Ambergris Caye and hope to sample a variety of Belizean eats, you're in luck. San Pedro offers a wide range of dining options for travelers looking for the best food on Ambergris Caye. You'll find everything from Central Park street food vendors and inexpensive "delis" around town, to upscale, romantic resort restaurants and personalized, private dining on the beach. Belize's varied cultural influences provide a wide range of foods that fall under the auspices of Belizean cuisine. Rice'n Beans with stew chicken is considered by most to be Belize's national dish, while weekend BBQ is an unmistakeable smell around the island. Don't stick to just high-end restaurants, be sure to try Belizean snack foods sold by street vendors, and hit one of the island's bakeries to pick up some traditional sweets.

erindesantiago's City Tips

  • There is no real dress code on the island, but avoid wearing bathing suits to restaurants and consider resort casual for dinner at a nicer restaurant.
  • Some restaurants, especially resort ones, will accept Visa/Mastercard (Amex and Discover aren't as widely accepted). Expect to pay cash at food stalls and smaller restaurants.
  • Be sure, if you plan to use US dollars here, they are pristine -- no wrinkled, torn, or tattered bills. Due to bank regulations, businesses have stopped accepting them.
  • Most prices are in BZ dollars (which is a standard 2 BZ to 1 US dollar), but you may find US prices at some resorts so watch closely.
  • Slow season correlates to hurricane season, which means you may find restaurants are closed for a few weeks or so, typically somewhere between August and October.
  • NOTE: Belize has strict regulations on seasonal foods like lobster and conch. Do not attempt to catch, purchase, order, or eat these when out of season as it's very illegal.

Chef Jennie is undoubtedly one of the best chefs in Belize. Her menu is varied and offers a number of traditional Belizean dishes and Mayan specialties you won't find elsewhere. Some of my favorite dishes include her Coconut Curry, Mango Chipotle Tacos, Whole Fried Fish, and Grilled Octopus to name a few. Doña Elvia founded Elvi's Kitchen approximately 40 years ago as a hole-in-the-wall takeout window underneath the family home. Today, Elvi's is a full-service restaurant that offers some of the best Belizean cuisine in a casual and comfortable environment. Jennie is Ms. Elvia's daughter and has transformed Elvi's into a world-renowned restaurant, even having the distinction of cooking for Prince Harry during his visit to Belize in 2012.

Casa Picasso is one of my recommended go-to spots for a nice night out on the island. No matter whether you're celebrating a special occasion or just looking for a romantic night out, owners Adam and Jackie will take excellent care of you. The menu is a globally-inspired mix of tapas and entrees. When lobster is in season, don't miss the lobster slides or lobster mac and cheese. Jackie is also quite knowledgeable about wines and maintains a nice selection of wines that will pair well with menu items. Save room for dessert -- they always have a selection of desserts that make it hard to choose just one. If you're in town on a Thursday, check out the weekly five-course chef's dinners. There is an option to include wine pairings with the first four courses, and these dinners are a great opportunity to sample dishes typically not found on the regular menu.

Conveniently located at the Sunbreeze Hotel, and directly across the street from the Tropic Air terminal in San Pedro is Blue Water Grill, or "BWG" as many refer to it. Blue Water Grill serves up breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day of the week. Tuesday and Thursday are sushi nights, which can get busy with locals and expats who look forward to the bi-weekly specials. One of the most commendable things about Blue Water Grill, aside from the quality of the food, is the owners' commitment to the community. Kelly and Mukul are very involved in the welfare of San Pedro, often donating a portion of their proceeds to benefit local charities and other important community projects.

Located on the beach right in town, chef Amy Knox has grown Wild Mango's into one of the island's best restaurants. My preference is lunch as you can enjoy the sea views. Amy's menu is varied and her lunch menu is always difficult to choose from. Chipotle Shrimp Tostadas, Tacos "San Pedro Style," the Pineapple Tuna Burger, and Bahn Mi are some of my favorite dishes. Her wraps are super popular -- come hungry, as they are pretty large!! The Bocaditos, or "Small Bites", menu is served all day long and features a large selection of specialty items. If you want to try different types of ceviche, Amy typically offers six different ones on the menu. If you can't decide between them, order the Tres Amigos, which gives you the option to try three different ceviches! Empanadas de Plantanos and Shrimp Stuffed Jalapeños round out some of my top picks at Wild Mango's.

El Fogon is a pretty special part of San Pedro history. The family-owned restaurant features dishes cooked in an open hearth, or "Fogon" in Spanish. Ceviche is one of the "must-try" dishes in San Pedro, and El Divino is renowned for its massive-sized ceviche that can feed an entire family. The "Mixed" is my personal recommendation at El Divino -- featuring shrimp, octopus, and conch (when in season). A medium is more than enough for two people, and it can even serve as an entire meal. I also recommend trying ceviche from multiple places in San Pedro as the styles can vary significantly, making what constitutes "the best" ceviche a very subjective topic.

If your plans in Belize include trying traditional Garifuna food, you'll want to visit Dangriga and Hopkins, traditional Garifuna villages on the mainland. However, if your Belize travels are limited to San Pedro only, visit the Black & White Cultural Entertainment Center. Serving up traditional Garifuna food, and offering educational sessions, owner Julia has done a great job of educating visitors on Garifuna traditions and food. Hudut, Cassava Bread, and Bundiga are a few of the traditional foods you should try. Most dishes are based on the use of coconut milk, chicken, fish, plantains, and more. Did you know, UNESCO recognizes Garifuna culture as a "masterpiece of the oral and intangible heritage of humanity?" I'm glad to see a push to share the importance of the Garifuna culture with visitors to San Pedro.

  • Obando’s Hot Panades
    Restaurants (Seafood)
    erindesantiago Says:

Obando's is a tiny food stall that recently opened on San Pedro's Back Street. This is a spot you aren't likely to find many tourists at. Obando's only sells panades, which slightly resemble the more traditional empanadas you find in other parts of Latin America. Panades are made with masa and filled with a variety of fillings, the most common being fish. Obando's sells a variety of panades, including chicken, chaya, pork, beef, beans, cheese, fish, and potato. He may also have lobster and shrimp as well. Panades are typically served with a cabbage salsa on top, and Obando's packs a little bit of eat. The best thing about these delicious panades? They are extremely budget-friendly at 1 BZ each (.50 US).

Hidden Treasure is a family-owned restaurant south of San Pedro serving Latin- and Caribbean-inspired cuisine. The ambiance is perfect for a romantic night out or celebrating a special occasion. Some of the more popular dishes at Hidden Treasure include the almond-crusted grouper, surf and turf, and the filet mignon. Be sure to try one of Hidden Treasure's interesting cocktail creations and absolutely save room for dessert.

Look for an interesting menu of Caribbean, Latin, and Belizean flavors. If you're celebrating a special occasion, inquire about the availability of a private dining table on the beach.

Make the trek north to X'tan Ha to have at least one meal at Temple Run Tavern. Temple Run Tavern is run by DJ, who originally started DJ's Burgers in town. DJ went from a small, hole-in-the-wall, quick service joint to opening DJ's Seaside Bar and Restaurant on the beach, where a larger number of people fell in love with his culinary talents. His burgers are legendary and the homemade buns are some of the best I've ever eaten anywhere. The burgers are only a small portion of the delicious eats available at Temple Run Tavern, so you may need to eat here more than once. Temple Run Tavern also offers a nice selection of traditional Belizean dishes each day of the week -- escabeche and chimole are definitely ones to try.

Rolled breakfast tacos are a Belizean specialty in Orange Walk, where many locals swear they make the best ones in the country. If you're not going to be in Orange Walk, head to Neri's in San Pedro to give rolled tacos a try. They are cheap, delicious, and filling. If you don't like really spicy food, order your tacos without chili, and then add your own hot sauce instead. Inquire about which of Neri's fresh juices are available, they are the perfect complement to your morning tacos.

When it comes to desserts in San Pedro, you'll want to head to DandE's at least one night on your vacation. While most people pronounce it "dandys", it's actually "D and E's," the initials of owners Dan and Eileen. Everything is handmade, and the menu changes often. Try local flavors like soursop if available. Eileen will gladly share what the most popular flavors of the day are, and you can even get a small sample to decide if you want to order it. If you've never had frozen custard, you'll find it's creamier and more smooth than regular ice cream.

If you're a choco-holic, you'll want to visit the Belize Chocolate Company on Front Street, right next to Wild Mango's. Try a variety of the locally-made chocolates. My favorites include the sea-salt caramels, chocolate salami, and chocolate cheesecake. Order a chocolate coffee or iced chocolate -- no such thing as too much chocolate here! Once you're done, be sure to purchase some Kakaw chocolate bars to take back home, and check out the other locally-produced chocolate retail products.
