What better way to start your romantic vacation than to fly to San Pedro in a private helicopter? Astrum Helicopters can customize private charters to get you from Belize's mainland in style. Another option is to book a helicopter tour of Ambergris Caye itself. You'll fly along Belize's Barrier Reef system for approximately 25 miles, and see a bit of Mexico at the northern tip of the island.
Prior to arriving in Belize, you should contact the owner, Lara, at 12 Belize to purchase a customized "Romance" gift basket. Lara is a longtime resident of San Pedro and one of Belize's best romantic travel gurus. She carries, and can source, a wide variety of locally made Belizean products -- everything from bath essentials to cooking ingredients for a romantic night in.
Made with beans from Guatemala, Caye Coffee is roasted right on Ambergris Caye. Front Street is a more mild, breakfast style blend while Back Street is my favorite and guaranteed to kick start your day. Middle Street is a blend of both and a great option for those who can't choose.
Romance and chocolate go hand and hand, so don't skip visiting the Belize Chocolate Company on Front Street in town. Enjoy a variety of Belizean chocolates, baked goods, and, one of my favorites -- chocolate coffee. Be sure to check out the variety of local chocolate-themed products available as well.
A couples massage should be on the itinerary for a romantic holiday in San Pedro. And, while many resorts feature spas and massage services, it's hard to argue against scheduling one that is is right over the water. Ocean Essence Day Spa is located on a pier, offering picturesque couples massages over the Caribbean Sea.
You might be wondering what an art gallery has to do with romance, but Melody offers painting classes that can be customized for a private lesson for two. This is a great couples' activity, and certainly a wonderful, and unique, souvenir that always remind you of your romantic vacation to Belize.
While scuba diving the Great Blue Hole is one of the most popular activities in Belize, the most romantic way to see it is from high above. San Pedro-based Tropic Air offers private charters over the Blue Hole that will easily rank as one of your most cherished travel moments in Belize.
Snorkeling Hol Chan Marine Reserve is one of the most popular activities in San Pedro, which means a trip can be anything but romantic. Consider booking a private boat so you can enjoy a more relaxed pace. You can customize your own tour so you hit other snorkel spots as well and finish off with a BBQ on the beach.
If chartering a private catamaran for a sunset sail is out of your budget, look at one of SEAduced sunset tours. The leisurely cruise heads south near Hol Chan Marine Reserve where you will be treated to one of Belize's signature sunsets.
If you prefer to catch the sunset while still on the island, head north of the bridge to Rain Restaurant and Rooftop Terrace at Grand Caribe. The terrace offers great views of the lagoon side of the island, so you'll have a front row seat for the sunset.
Head far north on Ambergris Caye to enjoy a romantic afternoon and lunch at Rojo Beach Bar. Order a specialty cocktail and head off to relax in the pool, overlooking the Caribbean Sea and Belize Barrier Reef. Don't expect typical beach bar food here as Rojo's menu is more upscale, and includes a number of Asian-inspired dishes.
Casa Picasso is one of my top picks for a romantic night out in San Pedro. Owners Adam and Jacqueline offer a globally-inspired menu utilizing quality ingredients while showcasing local specialties. The menu features a wide selection of tapas and entrees that will make it hard to choose -- every dinner I've had has been nothing short of spectacular. Look for special events and weekly wine pairing dinners, which are my favorite times to visit.
Family-owned Hidden Treasure Restaurant is another one of San Pedro's nicer dining spots for a romantic night out. Choose from a variety of Latin- and Caribbean-inspired creations -- my personal favorite is the almond-crusted grouper. Be sure to save room for dessert as you won't want to miss some of Hidden Treasure's homemade desserts!
Located inside the Holiday Hotel, Caprice Bar.Grill serves a number of traditional Belizean specialties with a twist. Upscale cuisine in a casual and comfortable beachfront location makes Caprice Bar.Grill and ideal option for a romantic evening. Be sure to see Leonel at the bar and order one of his specialty seasonal cocktails.
The Phoenix Resort's on-site Red Ginger restaurant is great for a nice romantic Sunday brunch, or to enjoy tapas and live music on Wednesday nights. Be sure to check out the brand new bar upstairs from Red Ginger. Open in the evenings, this is a great new spot to relax and enjoy a glass of wine or dinner under the stars.
No matter where you're staying, a trip to Wine de Vine will help add a romantic vibe. Choose a standard meat and cheese platter, or peruse the available offerings and make your own. Wine de Vine's stock rotates based on availability, but you'll typically find a nice selection of meats, cheeses, and pates. Wines are a nice mix of Old World and New World wines with many notable regions and wineries represented.
If your idea of a romantic vacation includes yoga in a beautiful setting, you won't want to miss Ak'bol Yoga Retreat and Eco-Resort. Yoga sessions take place under the scenic palapa on the pier overlooking the Caribbean Sea.
