parttimetravel's City Tips

  • Many of the larger pagodas have camera fees on top of entrance fees. Make sure you purchase the appropriate ticket before entering.
  • It is advised not to bring up political issues with locals. Let them raise it, and otherwise try to keep the conversation light.
  • Buddhism is prevalent throughout the country. It is important to be aware and respectful of monks, temples, and Buddha statues. Also, remember to remove your shoes before entering temples.
  • Though the days of zero ATMs in Burma are over, it's still advisable to bring lots of cash with you (US Dollars or Euros are best for exchange.)

The largest market in Yangon, this is the best place to do your shopping. Check out the local stalls, jewelry (jade and jewels are found throughout Burma), fabrics, and even food.

    Tips
    • I suggest coming here as a first stop on your trip to have a "longyi" made. This local dress is worn by both men and women, is extremely comfortable, and makes for a fantastic souvenir.
    • Bargaining does take place, though not as aggressively as in neighboring countries.
    • Be sure to have kyat (the local currency) on hand.
