Follow my guide to the area's best, but make sure you also visit Gallery Sixty Five - featuring contemporary Burmese art works, Nagar Glass Factory - recycling glass to make some interesting decorations and drinking glasses and Madame Thair's Curious Gallery that has an eclectic collection of pieces from Burma's history.

Travel-Curator's City Tips

  • Myanmar doesn’t have a specific rule on tipping - it is not expected but always appreciated.
  • Prices of goods in supermarkets, pharmacies, restaurants, hotels, official transport, and so on, are usually fixed.
  • For rickshaws, tuk tuk’s, motos and all taxi’s in Asia, always bargain first and make sure that you agree on the price before you start the service.
  • Most of Yangon is easy to get around on foot.
  • Take a taxi or tuk tuk to explore areas further out, such as to the Shwedagon Pagoda, or to carry your shopping purchases!
  • Dress modestly when visiting temples and Pagodas, and do not swim naked or topless in public.
  • Help to protect the Myanmar wildlife by refusing to purchase wildlife products.
  • Smile! It goes a long way with locals.
  • Be considerate when taking photos of others; always ask for permission first.
  • Avoid photographing anything to do with the military.
  • Picking up rubbish and not littering sets a good example for Myanmar's youths.
