Guide to Singapore's Parks

94%
Found this guide helpful

Singapore is called the garden city and the government has worked hard to keep natural, green areas in this country which has one of the highest population density ratios in the world. Yet in the midst of this highly modern and urbanized city-state, there are natural get aways which feature wild life and give you the feel that you are far from the bustle of the city. This guide will feature parks for a short stroll or a long hike, a bike ride, or walk; parks that feature history and others that provide vistas of this amazing city. There are also some hidden gems you may not find in guide books.

Danjiro's City Tips

  • Singapore also features wild-life in the form of macaque monkeys and monitor lizards. The monkeys are smart and are known to snatch food (it is against the law to feed them)
  • Sunscreen is recommended as the tropical sun is strong. Check the weather, and investing in a light weight, folding umbrellas can save you from a to-the-skin soak from the rain.
  • When hiking and walking in natural areas, it is recommended to use insect repellent as Singapore is in a region which has some cases of dengue fever.

Singapore is known for it's Orchids. The National Orchid garden is contained within the centrally located Singapore Botanical gardens. This is a must see, along with the botanical gardens. Singapore creates hybrid orchids for special occasions and visits from foreign dignitary. These are on display in various settings. The "cool room" environment is refreshing as they have simulated higher elevation temperatures to enable certain species to grow. This is really nice on a hot Singapore afternoon. Small admission is required, but worth the cost.

Singapore is unique in that more of the recent buildings are including gardens as a part of the architecture. The iconic Marina Bay Sands is a signature part of the Singapore skyline and the ship like structure on the top features an amazing garden and deck with arguably, some of the best views in the city. Hotel guests have access to the infinity pool that is 57 floors above the city. The best time to go is at dusk as the city lights up.

The Esplanade Park is sandwiched in-between the historic Singapore Cricket club with it's back drop of colonial buildings, and the durian-like Esplanade Theater. Start here and work your way around Marina Bay. Make your way up past the Asian Civilizations museum and cross the cast-iron, Cavenagh Bridge, pass by historic Fullerton Hotel. Cross Fullerton Road to One Fullerton and see the iconic Merlion fountain with the back drop of Marian Bay Sands. Follow counter clockwise around the bay, by the customs house, past The Promontory. In the corner, the Marina Bay City gallery has a model of the plans for the Marina Bay area. Stroll by the super luxury boutiques along the boardwalk by the Marina Bay Sands. There are plenty of cafes inside if you need refreshment. Head toward the flower blossom like ArtScience Museum and cross the Helix pedestrian bridge for some of the most amazing skyline views in Singapore. As you walk back towards the Esplanade theater, look for the frequent free concerts and events hosted in the outside pavilion.

An amazing new land-mark in Singapore, this free out-door garden is striking with its futuristic tree structures. There is a small admission to go up in one of the towers, and traverse a curved cat-walk that is suspended high above the gardens for some amazing vistas. Go in the morning or later afternoon to enjoy "golden hour." There are two shell like flower domes which provide access to different climates and the plants from those regions. There are some exotic plants inside. It is one of the largest suspended green houses. The outside gardens also feature different areas for plant and garden styles from different regions. Once in the MacRitchie reservoir, you will feel far from any city, as it is a full on "jungle" inside. Danjiro Says:

The Pinnacle is one of the largest HDB structures in Singapore. With an MRT card, one can gain admission to the roof-top garden. These tall towers are linked with a roof-top platform that features mini gardens, and nice places to take in the sunset. It offers a great view of China Town, the CBD and the Western side of Singapore. The admission is pretty in expensive for one of the best, but lesser known vistas in the city.

    Istana

    Danjiro Says:

The Istana is like the White House of Singapore. It is set in a beautiful estate with a sprawling lawn and beautiful gardens. When Dignitaries visit, the meetings are often held here, so security is of essence. Thus if you want to see it, you need to wait for a major public holiday, when it is open to the public to see. Stay alert, you may catch a glimpse of the PM or President. The building is beautiful and has a museum of gifts presented by world leaders.

For Singaporeans, this feels like the hinterlands. It is accessible by bus, but it may be best to bike or taxi or drive. Inside there are some alligator sized monitor lizards, crabs, birds and otter like animals in the inlet and mangrove areas. Bird watchers come here during migrations time and photograph birds from bird huts around the marshes. It is good for hiking and nature watching. Like MacRitchie, it is one of the more natural parks in Singapore

Labrador Nature Reserve provides some great views entrance to the Singapore Harbor. It also holds some historical significance for WWII. The best part of this park is the long connector path that has been developed in recent years that skirts along the water. It turns into a board walk by the very fashionable Keppel Club area. The buildings here are very unique and modern with their organic, bending surfaces. It also provides a view of some amazing yachts and boats in Keppel bay. Take the unique bridge across to Keppel Island via Keppel Bay Vista. It is a great place to spend an afternoon walk or ride.
