j100lok's City Tips

  • If walking along Orchard Road and you want to avoid the humid heat or monsoon rain outside, you can walk from one end to the other and even cross the road underground in A/C bliss
  • If you want to drink beer cheaply - visit a local outdoor food court (hawker centre) and look at for the drinks stall - you pay a lot less than at a swanky bar
  • If there is a long queue, it doesnt mean it will be good (Singaporeans will queue simply because someone else is).....unless its a food stall - then trust their judgement!
  • Tipping is not necessary as its typically included.....this includes Taxi's
  • Get an Easylink card for easy travel on the underground transport system - similar to London's Oyster card, it can also be used on the buses and at 7-11's and McDonalds etc

You can't visit Singapore without a visit to Orchard Road However - word of warning...marmite alert You'll either love it or hate it Its the capital of all things materialistic - shopping mall upon shopping mall will line this road and to be honest - they contain the same shops! It gets extremely crowded here with either locals, expats or tourists - everyone comes here for one reason or another You can find decent places to eat and even drink along here if you know where to find it Eg - Emerald Hill has a decent array of cool hang out bars Orchard Towers comes alive after 11pm for the seedier side of entertainment (if thats your thing by the way, locals prefer to head to the Geylang district - which, by the way, has fantastic places to eat too and some are open 24hrs!)

    • Luxury Traveller
    Tips
    • Shops open late and close late - get there for 10-11am to avoid the crowds if shopping is your thing
    • Lucky Plaza is a tourist trap - however, if you negotiate well enough, you could land yourself a good deal Locals tend to visit Sim Lim Mall for electronics

By day its a great place to soak up some history of what Singapore mustve been like as a bustling fishermans and smugglers haven Take a bum boat ride along the river or just chill with a drink and bites along the many bars and restaurants By night, its very much like being in any tourist resort (think Algarve or Benidorm) as the night owls come out to prey You're basically running the gauntlet from restaurant peddlers trying to entice you to eat at their place or if you walk along the wrong street, the peddlers are typically young filipino women and its not food they want you to eat! Popular haunt for tourists and expats with decent bars and my favourite pub - the Penny Black - but during quieter evenings, places can shut early and you have to venture over to Clarke Quay if you wish to continue your evening's entertainment

Marmite moment You'll either love this place or hate it It can be described as either a hideously fake island that is so over the top or wannabe Disneyesque that you will get back on the monorail that brought you here from the Vivo City Shopping Mall and head right back Even the sand on its fake beach is imported from Indonesia OR you will love all the bars, restaurants, casino, theatre and all sorts of shennigans that you can find here You can either spend the entire day and night here - I have! Or an hour is all you need - again, this happened to me too Key highlights I could recommend: Fort Siloso - little frequented tourist attraction that you MUST visit if you want to learn about the history of Singapore - what i thought would be an hour's visit turned into three Sentosa Cove - a secluded marina of bars and restaurants if you want to avoid the crowds

    Tips

Pretty cool concept that is worth a visit due to how unique it is Most of the cool animals you see at the zoo are asleep during the day, but when the sun goes down, they become active and thats why this place works so well

    Tips

Its a tourist trap But one i will happily recommend purely for two reasons: One - to sample the famous Singapore Sling cocktail at a classic colonial bar and hotel Two - the only place in Singapore you can throw peanut shells on the floor and not get fined Warning - its a tourist trap, so be warned that the price of drinks are insanely extortionate here

Another tourist trap - but does house an array of decent bars and restaurants The outdoor area can be extremely popular during major sporting events especially if Man Utd or Liverpool football clubs are playing live on TV as the local fan clubs come down here in droves to watch the games on the giant screens they put up Great atmosphere though and worth checking out On non event days - this place can actually be a chilled and serene place to hang out
