PandanBear's City Tips

  • A good idea to avoid the long taxi queue is to book your taxi ahead of time. They have a great system which is linked to your mobile phone and saves all the waiting.
  • Public transport is never far from your doorstep and taxis are well priced, but can be in short supply on the weekend around Orchard Road and the drivers very friendly.
  • The temperature rarely fluctuates and remains in the low to mid 30's most of the year with high humidity
  • Singapore has GST which is added to your purchases and restaurants include a service charge as well.
  • Tipping is not expected in Singapore but always appreciated for good service.
  • Singapore is an extremely safe and clean city and very easy to navigate.

Gardens by the Bay is a must for nature lovers. The Flower Dome displays flowers from all over the world in a brilliant kaleidoscope of colour. The Cloud Forest features the tallest indoor water fall in the world and is surrounded by a misty display of tropical flowers and plants.

Marina Bay encompasses a bevy of sights and sounds, museums and architecture. The largest attraction here would be the iconic Marina Bay Sands accommodation and shopping complex with its three towers and infinity pool on top. Catch public transport to this complex and spend some time maybe going to the theatre, high end window shopping or simply relaxing with a coffee.

This is a huge Ferris wheel and is a great way to see the skyline of Singapore from a lofty height. Each capsule is air conditioned and one rotation takes approximately 30 minutes and moves very slowly. This is a great way to test your fear of heights because it is so slow and smooth and the views are breath taking.

Even if your not a shopper it is fascinating to walk the length of this road and get lost in all the array of malls, shopping centres and hotel complexes both at street level and underground. Everything is here from high end shopping to the budget conscious. There is something for everyone and if you get hungry, never fear, the basements are full of places to eat.

This park is delightful set on a hill close to the central business area. A highlight of the park is The Battle Box which was the underground command centre used during the Battle of Singapore. Walk through the individual rooms and feel like time has stopped. The life like wax figures re enacting the final scenes of battle are amazing and worthy of a visit.

After a day of drinking in the history of Singapore find yourself in Chinatown at the Yummy Viet. A wonderful clean restaurant with plenty of seating and tasty fresh food. Staff are attentive and prices are good. The restaurant refrains from calling you in from the front of house, which makes it more attractive.
