Santiago Off the Beaten Path

Exclusively commissioned by TripAdvisor

Found this guide helpful

This guide will take you to beautiful but lesser known areas of Santiago, including streets, neighborhoods, parks, vineyards, and more. You will find places to walk and enjoy all around Santiago: Some of them connected with tourist areas but others found outside the city center. While many of these places are gradually becoming more well known, their authentic "off the beaten path" essence remains intact.

rafagome's City Tips

  • It's best to plan your day ahead and make a reservation if you'd like to go with a guided tour.
  • For your tour, just bring essentials, an open mind, and common sense.
  • The metro is a great way to move in the city, but try to avoid the rush hour (from 7am to 9am and from 6pm to 8pm.)
  • You can buy a "bip card," that works for buses inside the city and also for the metro. You must charge money on it before you travel.
  • The appropriate tip is 10% and is usually written as "recommended" on the bottom of the restaurant bill.

This is a nice, protected neighborhood with plenty of Neo-Gothic and Neo-Classical architecture to admire. If you're traveling with children, they will love the original Plaza Brasil playground, designed by Federica Matta. Plus, there are lots of coffee shops and restaurants on Cumming Street and Brasil Street.

Head to this quirky, original restaurant — found on Cumming Street — that has different, attention-grabbing themes in each dining room, such as the inside of a boat and even the inside of a whale! Seafood is the main specialty here, and you can eat fresh fish from 'Robinson Crusoe island,' and even from Easter Island.

This historical area of Santiago — found in Barrio Brasil — is a little hidden gem with cobbled streets, palaces, and 1920s mansions that transport you back in time. In the center of the neighborhood is the 'Plaza Libertad de Prensa' (Freedom of the Press Square,) where you'll find a beautiful water fountain and musicians playing their instruments.

    rafagome Says:

Sewell was a mining town in the Andes Mountains — copper has been mined here since the early 1900s — and is now a World Heritage Site. Take a tour of the town and check out the small but interesting museum of copper mining.

    Tips
    • From Santiago there are tours every Saturday at 8.30am. The tours normally include lunch and a bilingual guide. Remember that you won't be back until around 8.30pm.
    • Even if it looks like a warm day, bring an extra layer because the wind and the altitude can make it pretty cold.
