Jessica B's City Tips

  • Many restaurants add a standard 10% service charge to the bill. However, if the service was exceptional, an extra tip left on the table will be very much appreciated.
  • Tipping is not necessary for taxis, but it is customary to round up to the nearest reis.
  • Most restaurants in Rio do not accept pre-bookings, so if you don’t want to wait for a table, head down a little bit earlier (around 7pm for dinner) to beat the rush.
  • Be sure to check out the Brazilian specialties: feijoada (bean-and-meat stew), pão de queijo (tapioca-flour cheese bread) and acai (a smoothie made with the Amazonian acai berry).

Located in a 19th-century building in the heart of the city center, this cafe is worth visiting as much for its beautiful decor as for its food. Serving light meals and offering an impressively long list of delicious sweets, Confeitaria Colombo is the ideal place to do brunch. (And it's cheaper than you’d think!)

Tucked away from the usual tourist areas, this humble restaurant is located in the favela area of Leme. If you don’t mind sitting at plastic tables on the street, then Bar do David is the place to go for a completely authentic Carioca (Rio native) experience.

    Tips
    • The seafood in particular makes this restaurant worth a visit. Try the seafood feijoada.
    • If you’re heading here from the beach, be prepared for a moderate climb.
    • Don't let the location put you off; it's one of the safest favelas in Rio. And it's nice that the money you spend goes into the local community of this relatively poor area.
