India's number one collection of antiquities, manuscripts, sculptures and decorative arts. The National Museum is great as an introduction to Indian civilization since ancient times. Don't miss the excellent collection of miniature paintings on display here, too.

The Crafts Museum displays arts and crafts from all over India. Here you can explore living Indian traditions, including little huts with wall paintings, open courtyards with dramatic displays, puppet shows, village shrines, and terracotta and metal workshops. Don't forget to check out their extensive textile collection.

    Tips
    • The museum shop is one of the best places in Delhi to buy gorgeous genuine handicrafts at fixed prices.
    • You can have lunch or a cooling drink (masala chaas, an Indian buttermilk variety, perhaps) at the outdoor Cafe Lota.
    • Do take enough time to explore, as walking through the museum is a pleasure in itself: it is built like a village, with sensitive displays that really seem to "belong."
    • In winter (October-March), there are also live demonstrations of several crafts.

A memorial to Mahatma Gandhi, a key figure in the Indian freedom struggle. This is the house where he lived and died, after his assassination in 1949. Apart from Gandhi's few personal effects, there are photographs, paintings and relics pertaining to his years in the house, plus an interactive exhibit of his life, featuring film footage and voice recordings.

The galleries at NGMA trace the journey of contemporary Indian art from 19th century miniatures to Company paintings, Raja Ravi Varma to Bengal School, the Progressives to present day works. Famous works on display include those by European Orientalists (e.g. Thomas Daniell), old masters (Raja Ravi Varma, Abanindramath Tagore), modernists (Rabindranath Tagore, Amrita Sher-Gil), and contemporaries (M.F. Hussain, Tyeb Mehta)...but also much much more.

For something more culturally off-beat, this small, quirky museum displays a variety of toilet-related paraphernalia, dating from ancient times to the contemporary period. It is run by a non-profit organization that has done extraordinary work in sanitation and waste management.

A unique museum with a collection of steam locomotives and carriages, signaling equipment, antique furniture, photographs and other Indian Railways memorabilia. Check out the saloons of the Maharaja of Mysore and the Prince of Wales, the Fairy Queen (a very well preserved steam locomotive engine), and take a joy ride in the toy train.

Jawaharlal Nehru is counted among the most influential leaders of India: As Prime Minister of India, he was the primary architect of India's political and economic philosophy after independence from British rule. Teen Murti Bhavan was his official residence, and nowadays houses a museum portraying India's struggle for Independence, including many letters, photos and memorabilia belonging to Nehru. There is also an interesting Planetarium on its grounds.
