Although the Napa Valley is most famous for its wineries and their produce, there are also plenty of museums, galleries and the like to absorb your attention. These range from quirky museums such as the Sharpsteen through the living gallery of Villa Ca'Toga to the natural Old Faithful Geyser.

Nick E's City Tips

  • Tipping for a sit-down meal conforms to the American norm of fifteen to twenty percent.
  • It is better to visit Napa outside of the busy summer season if possible.
  • The only way of realistically visiting most places in the valley is by car. Rental is available in Napa Town if you do not have your own vehicle.
  • Napa Valley has quite limited public transport options, with the VINE bus system operating a fairly skeletal service six days a week and none on Sundays.

    Nick E Says:

The Sharpsteen Museum's permanent collection concentrates on the history of the northern part of the Napa Valley from prehistoric times to WWI, with special emphasis on the period of growth caused by mass immigration. The varied temporary exhibitions are changed twice a year.

The Petrified Forest, around five miles west of Calistoga, has a fine array of trees turned to stone, both out on the wooded trail and in the small indoor museum. The surrounding scenery is equally spectacular.

This modern reconstruction of a Palladian villa is a veritable treasure trove of art and whimsy, all lovingly created and personally explained to the visitor during the guided tour by Italian owner and artist Carlo Marchiori. The lush grounds contain recreations of ruined temples, a shell-encrusted cave and a peaceful Buddhist corner.

Although it barely compares to its namesake in Yellowstone Park, Napa's very own Old Faithful Geyser spouts off with alarming regularity and gives you a good taster of the thermal activity to be found further north in California. The gardens and other on site attractions add to its appeal.
