Whitney C's City Tips

  • Tip 15-20% in restaurants.
  • Parking is relatively easy to find in Portland (compared with most cities). However, the city is extremely walkable and bike-friendly, so I'd recommend only renting a car for out-of-the-way excursions.
  • Some parking meters accept credit cards, while others do not. Bring some quarters just in case.
  • Portland is "America's Bike Capital" — get to pedaling!

    Whitney C Says:

Coffee is the best way to start most days, but it's especially essential in a city that is known for its coffee scene. Start out your day in the 'Weird City' with a visit to Case Study, one of the best (in my opinion) coffee shops in the area. My aunt brought me here once, and I was immediately obsessed with its really cool vibe and of course with its excellent coffee. It's been a favorite spot ever since!

    Tips
    • Even in the middle of a weekday, it can be hard to get a table. If you see an open one, grab it! Or sit around and stalk someone who looks like she's leaving.
    • The chai is fantastic, but I've been dying to try the "Fleur de Sel Dark Caramel."

The store has a fantastic selection of quirky, quality, locally made items that you'll actually be happy to display in your home.

The Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area is hands-down one of the most beautiful locations in the Portland vicinity. Get a feel for some of the gorgeous scenery from your car, or hop out and go for a walk or hike.

    Whitney C Says:

Lunchtime! Yet another Portland special, McMenamins is a chain restaurant like you've never seen before. These restaurants are everywhere, but each one is situated in a different historic building. The Kennedy School location was an elementary school, opened in 1915, but McMenamins has replaced unrecognizable grub and surly cafeteria staff with hearty pub fare and a convivial vibe.

    • Many of the McMenanmins outposts also host a wide range of events (think movies and live music), as well as unique hotels. Check out the website to learn more.

The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry, or 'OMSI' as the locals call it, is absolutely one of Portland's highlights, no matter what your age is. Tons of interactive exhibits make for a super fun day and lots of learning — which you'll be largely be unaware of, simply because you're having too much fun! This is a definite must-see, especially for families.

Another of Portland's gems, Voodoo is the perfect afternoon snack spot. Chances are, if you have a friend who's visited, he or she won't shut up about it. Yes, your friend is obnoxious — but seriously, it's for good reason! These are some of the best and most unique donuts you will ever have the joy of laying eyes (and teeth) on.
