Jessica L's City Tips

  • Many restaurants don't have an official dress code, but with such a strong food culture, clientele tend to dress to impress.
  • Dallas is a big dining out city, so if you want to ensure your spot at that hip restaurant you're checking out, call ahead to book a reservation.
  • Compared to the rest of the state, Dallas is a little less western cowboy and a little more busy-city metropolis.
  • Renting a car is highly recommended, as Dallas isn't especially pedestrian-friendly and the Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) only covers so much of the sprawling city.
  • The best seasons to visit Dallas are spring and fall. Summers can get scorchingly hot and humid, while winters run the gamut between mild to full of hail storms.
  • The United States has a robust tipping culture, so be sure to leave a tip whenever you dine out. If you can't decide how much (between 10-20%), try 15% and call it even.
  • Texans in general are very friendly and sociable, so don't be too put off if you feel they're being overly helpful.

    Jessica L Says:

Dallas offers a variety of different cuisines under the 'Pappas' name (for example, Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchen, which is a great option for seafood and Cajun!), but Papas Bros. steakhouses are true classics. Each has its own onsite butchers to provide that perfect cut, and all of the beef is dry-aged in house. But the quality of meat isn't the only thing that keeps bringing people around: The service is also top-notch. Any under-/overcooked steak will be replaced faster than a shake of a lamb's tail, and you'll feel well taken care of and allowed to dine at your own pace.

    Tips
    • Definitely plan to share side dishes and desserts; even the steaks can be too large for some. Worst case scenario? Ask for a to-go bag for a full midnight meal at home.
    • The bread you're brought as an appetizer is also amazing — don't fill up on it, though. You'll not be wanting for anything by the time you're halfway through your steak.
    • The main seating area is dim and cozy but can get a bit loud and feel overcrowded. Ask to be seated in one of the peripheral side rooms for a quieter experience.
    • Some guests might feel like they're being oversold to by the waitstaff; don't take it personally and just stick firm to your guns and order what you'd like.

You can't go wrong with any of the dishes at Pecan Lodge. From beef ribs, pulled pork, and brisket to scrumptious and plentiful sides of collard greens, mac and cheese, and fried okra, every single item menu is a must-try. Sit with the locals (at the bar or out on the patio), enjoy some of the joint's regular live music, and stuff your face with down-home goodness.

    Tips
    • There's a bulk counter located inside for those intense carnivores looking to order more than five pounds of delicious meat.
    • Some people find the BBQ sauces to be average, but it's enough to just enjoy the pure, unadulterated meat for its own sake.
    • Seating is first-come, first-served, but keep in mind that holding a table while a friend/partner waits in line to order is discouraged. Never fear! Turnover is actually fairly quick.
    • The Hot Mess, a fully stacked baked sweet potato, is excellent hangover (or anytime!) food.

    Jessica L Says:

American chef and restaurateur Kent Rathbun's flagship restaurant is a solid go-to for anyone seeking a semi-fancy atmosphere. All of the food is on point and infused with just enough eccentricity to keep things interesting, combining surf and turf in exquisite and nearly Asian-fusion-y ways. Admittedly, Dallas's general propensity toward 'too much muchness' can also be felt in the dishes, but if you're looking for just that (and if consistently amazing table service isn't your number one concern), go ahead and give Abacus the ol' college try!

    • Abacus's Lobster Shooters are iconic and a must-try. Sip at the delicious creamy red curry sauce in the little sake cup, then down the delicious lobster dumpling in one bite!
    • If you can't find street parking in this busy area, Abacus offers a free valet service.

    Jessica L Says:

The only Texan restaurant to win the AAA Five Diamond Award, The French Room has held the prestigious honor for a quarter of a century — and with good reason, too! Located inside the historic Hotel Adolphus in downtown Dallas, this beauty's romantic rococo decor and top-notch formal service will transport you to the era of European courtesans and monarchs. With an excellent wine list and seasonal three-course set menus, the New American haute cuisine is perfect for all special occasions — even if it's just to celebrate being fancily awesome and dapper for a night.

    Tips
    • It's so fancy here that there's a "five and older" policy enforced on younger guests. To create a respectful atmosphere for the other patrons, leave the little ones with a sitter!
    • Don a jacket for this restaurant; the dress code is strict here. (Needless to say, jeans and sneakers are also prohibited.)
    • The restaurant is closed on Sundays and Mondays and is open only for the dinner hours (6-9:30pm) Tuesday to Saturday.
    • If you're not a fan of the prix fixe menu options or just can't eat that much, try a smaller tasting for better value, or check out the a la carte menu.
    • Take care if you're dropping by during summer; The French Room takes its annual summer holiday then, usually during the first week of July. Check the website for details.

Soufflés, soufflés, soufflés! If you've never had a soufflé before or are looking for a dish to challenge to your grandma's best recipe, Rise No. 1 Salon de Soufflé is the spot to go. Perfectly situated for a pre-show dinner in the heart of the Arts District, Tei An is a great stop-by for anyone looking for a solid Japanese mainstay in Dallas. Though the sushi is quite good, the soba (buckwheat) noodle dishes are some of the biggest crowd pleasers here. I highly recommend the sampler that provides a few sauces, including Tei An's original Texas-inspired pecan sauce. Even dessert can be soba-themed — get the soba-infused ice cream with black honey for a creative twist on a Japanese favorite!

    Jessica L Says:

Il Cane Rosso is one of the more solid pizzerias in Dallas (soon to open in Houston, too!), and while it is a great casual joint for cheap eats, it can also cater to relaxed date nights and special events. The dining room is rustic but refined, and the decent wine and craft beer collections, both on tap and bottled, provide the perfect complement to your pie of choice. Crunchy thin crust lovers may find Cane Rosso's crusts a bit soggy and underdone, but if you like your Neapolitan-style crusts chewy and topped with high-quality cheeses, take up your fork and knife and enjoy to your heart's content!

Opinions vary when it comes to the food, but a pre- or post-meal beer here hits the spot. Tips
    • Free valet parking is hidden around the back of the building.
    • Not a beer drinker? Chances are the happy hour options won't wow you. Expand your palate and take a shot of a "beginner's beer" — the bartenders will be happy to guide you.
    • You can get five full-size beers for about the same price as the expensive beer flight of five five-ouncers, but if you're just looking for a taste, the cost could be worth it.

    Jessica L Says:

Locals love the Tex-Mex goodness at Urban Taco, where the decor is on point and Happy Hour house margaritas are fantastic. The tacos are perfect for either a quick nosh or a super casual dinner date sans the whole taqueria feel. Add in a couple of sides, or the three-salsa sampler, and you have yourself a meal of deliciousness.

    Jessica L Says:

For being so far from the sea, Dallas's seafood game is rather impressive. Del Frisco's reportedly has some of the best crab cakes outside of Maryland, and the lobster macaroni and cheese is a local favorite. Turfier options are generally good as well, but they can occasionally be a little hit or miss. If your mean is not quite cooked to your liking, don't be shy to ask them to have another go at it!

    Smoke
    Restaurants (American, Barbecue)
    See more photos
    Jessica L Says:

Although it's one of the best barbecue joints in town, Smoke is also quite vegetarian friendly, with dishes and sides like beet carpaccio and crispy German potatoes. You'll also be surprised to find some solid drinkable wines here, but enough about the 'extras' — let's talk about the meat! All of Smoke's meat is slow-cooked to perfection and offered in wet and dry rubs. Try the brisket with each of the four BBQ sauces, or go au natural and let that pulled pork melt in your mouth as easily as it falls off the bone.

Kenny's is another great spot for consistently awesome food, with solid steaks in huge portions, great desserts and popovers, and fantastic service. But the clincher here is the martini service. Made with on-tap Grey Goose and served in a huge frosty glass, your martini will not only be on point, but will be kept chilled while you drink it. How? Your waiter will roll around and replace your glass with a fresh and frosty new one!

When the poncy Dallas restaurant scene isn't your style, head to Jimmy's Food Store for an authentic Italian prosciutto di parma sandwich (complete with fresh mozzarella, tomato, basil, and olive oil) straight from the deli counter. A homey mom-and-pop shop, Jimmy's carries every kind of fresh and homemade pasta and ravioli, plus a plethora of great wines and other specialty Italian food items that you'll be hard-pressed to find in a regular grocery store. If you get too overwhelmed by the variety of options and the owner isn't around to guide you, don't be afraid to ask the regulars, who are sure to outnumber tourists here. They'll give you some great pairing advice for pastas and sauces, as well as cold cuts, cheeses, and wines — the best part of being a truly local joint!

Here's another boozy (yet family-friendly) recommendation with great food. Head to Mariano's Hacienda Ranch to try a frozen margarita from the place that claims to have invented the drink (the first machine is even showcased at the Smithsonian) back in the 1970s. While you're here, enjoy some of the best Tex-Mex food you'll find in Dallas, from fajitas and tacos to poblano al carbon — all with generous fixings and perfectly balanced sauce-to-meat ratios. Outdoor seating is available, complete with a roaring fire pit on chillier evenings, or you can have your drink at the bar and use the ice trough to keep your drinks cold for the duration of your stay!

Situated in a converted Oak Cliff house, Kessler Baking Studio is a bit unassuming from the outside, but when you walk inside, you'll be hit with an aroma that reminds you exactly why you decided to come so far out of your way for dessert. Clyde, the owner and main baker, will guide you through his tasty menu of fresh home-baked cookies and brownies, all displayed in huge glass jars as you enter. Each cookie is about the size of your face, and is perfectly crunchy around the outside, delightfully soft and chewy on the inside, and generously packed with toppings and ingredients, all of which are natural and local. As it's not far from the hip-and-happenin' restaurants of Bishop Arts area, try skipping out on dessert at dinner for some delicious baked goods from Kessler's instead!
