Not many people come to the peninsula of Virginia as its mostly farmland and marshes. But you will find tons of small antique shops,... more » fishing villages, and farm stores. Pick your own berries!
Introduce the legacy of the duPont family, and this brings us Mrs. duPont's contribution to the Audubon Society with various birding locations and hiking trails on nice parcels of preserves.
This hiking bundle takes you through three different birding habitats with unique species in each.
From the Bush mill preserve you will find a diverse forest ecosystem not based on pine trees, and smaller birds...leading to a bay river water system with plenty of overlooks.
Then to the Dameron Marsh preserve we find bigger types of birds that may nest on the ground in the thickets of beach reeds that are 5 feet tall! The path leads to an open overlook of a vast marsh meeting the bay, and more nestnig opportunities therein.
Lastly we visit Mrs. duPont's Audubon location, Hughlett point preserve which is mainly a pine forested site with beach access to the bay. Here you will find barren trees suitable for eagle nesting, and smaller birds such as cardinals and hummingbirds. Plenty of areas along the beach to lay a blanket down for lunch, and relax.
From overlooks to beach views, this easy hike presents many birds and plenty of solitude in three diverse ecosystems! less «
