What started out as the trip of a lifetime for my daughter and her cousin soon turned out to be a nightmare.
On the third night my daughter and her cousin were asleep in their room which was locked and were awoken by a noise in the early hours to find a shirtless man crouched down next to my daughter's bed rummaging through her personal belonging. On being startled the male has ran from the room stealing $700 of my daughters hard earned savings and $300 of her cousins. The room had no safe so personal items cannot be secured within the rooms.
As a result of this my daughter and cousin stayed elsewhere the following night too terrified to return to the same room. The following night they were moved by the owners wife into another room, however were unable to sleep properly for the remainder of the trip too terrified of being robbed again. My daughter and cousin had to use bricks and a chain to keep the room safe and slept with their property on their person and torches in hand every night.
There are no security guards at the hotel and the Police say the offender is a recidivist having been to gaol 3 times previously.
Thankfully Ben who was staying at the Hotel managed to help my daughter report matter to police after initially being accused of not locking door by owners wife trying to deflect blame onto my 19 year old daughter.
The Police then tried to charge my daughter $300 Australian Dollars for the police report!!
The owners wife was shown how the flimsy the locks were and agree it was a fault of the hotels.
As a result of what happened my daughter does not want to ever travel again terrified that this may happen again and both are still traumatised.
Please be aware that this hotel does not have security guards or safes in room so nothing is safe.
The only compensation the hotel gave was to reduce the cost of washing by $3.00.
Please do not stay at Nias or hotels on island if they do not have security guards or safes in room as it is not safe!!
Do not travel alone.
On a good note Agus and Dati were beautiful cooks and nightly dinner best part of trip sadly.
Straight up this is the best place to stay when surfing Nias. It's a beautiful hand-made resort in the style of the old Nias Kings Village architecture. The Bungalows and gardens are a pleasure to sleep in and walk around. There is cold beer and great food cooked by the amazing helpers such as Citi and Dati. Both girls bring a happy smile to the place. There is a large deck on the beach that looks up to the point. Its perfect for an arvo beer and chill with the local kids after a long day surfing.
It's run by Mark and Debbie... we only met Debbie on our trip... and she was super accommodating to all our needs and has a beautiful heart... it's like you mum came to look after you while you went surfing in Nias. haha
If you're worried that you are too far down from the keyhole... don't be. Its a one minute walk up the beach.. which is nice to say hi to all the lovely locals in Sorake and other surfers... get tips and share stories. When you come in you actually get out almost right in front of KabuNohi. Perfect when you're tired.
Yes you pay a little more than the other places up the beach... but its the same price as a backpackers in Oz... (off-season - October rates) and trust me... i've seen other places and talked to other surfers and unless your absolutely skint... get a room at KabuNohi and enjoy a little more comfort and great service.
Without a doubt... I'll be back here when next in Nias.
The room is wonderful, the location is unbeatable and the amenities is the best in the region.Do the surfing and trekking to the village near by will make your stay in the south of Nias unforgettable. Try the local food, nasi goreng, sate ayam.
